MANTI — The powerful rhythms of Japanese taiko drumming will once again echo through Sanpete County later this month as the Utah Taiko Experience returns with its annual “Summer Thunder” finale concert on Saturday, July 26.
The free outdoor event will take place at the Manti City Park Stage and promises an evening of energetic performances, cultural celebration, and community engagement. Organizers invite residents and visitors alike to enjoy an experience that blends world-class musical artistry with local wellness initiatives and support for youth performing arts.
Each summer, taiko drummers from around the world gather in Manti for the Utah Taiko Experience, spending the week training together while exploring the mountains, hiking local canyons, and immersing themselves in the natural beauty of Sanpete County. Their weeklong retreat culminates in the public performance, where participants share the traditions and excitement of Japanese taiko drumming with the community.
This year’s event highlights the growing involvement of local Sanpete County taiko performers while also introducing a new partnership with the Central Utah Counseling Center to promote community health and wellness.
Activities begin well before the concert with a Community Wellness Fair from 5 to 7 p.m. Families can visit booths featuring local mental and physical health resources, enjoy food from area food trucks, and listen to live musical performances before the evening’s main event.

The “Summer Thunder” concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Featuring dozens of taiko performers, the show combines the thunderous sounds of traditional Japanese drums with synchronized movement, modern musical arrangements, and colorful choreography. Inspired by Utah’s rugged landscapes, the performance is designed to be both visually captivating and musically powerful.
While the concert offers an evening of exceptional entertainment, organizers say its impact extends well beyond the stage.
Over the past three years, the event has helped generate community support for improvements to the Manti High School performing arts program. Funds raised and awareness generated through the concert have contributed to the revitalization of the school’s auditorium, including the purchase of a custom acoustic shell and a new lighting control board that benefit local student performances throughout the year.
“Summer Thunder is a celebration of community, culture, health, and the beauty of Sanpete County,” said event director Razz Purcell. “We are thrilled to bring global artists to rural Utah to uplift our communities and support local youth.”
Admission to both the Wellness Fair and the concert is free. Those attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating.
