Spring City Elementary celebrates young readers with leafy success
Spring City Elementary School’s library came to life this year as younger students participated in a special reading activity that encouraged at-home reading and transformed the library’s bare tree into a lush, green spectacle. Students in kindergarten through third grade earned leaves for their reading efforts, filling the tree with foliage as the year progressed.
The reading initiative was simple yet effective: if students read for five days a week, they received one leaf. Those who went the extra mile and read all seven days were awarded two leaves. These leaves were then added to the bare tree in the library, creating a visual representation of the students’ collective reading achievements. By the end of the school year, the tree was fully leafed out, symbolizing the dedication and hard work of the young readers.
To celebrate their success and the culmination of the reading activity, the school organized a special crafting event. The students were given the opportunity to choose from three different crafts: making a leaf wreath, creating an accordion leaf fold, or designing a string leaf picture. This creative celebration not only rewarded the students for their reading efforts but also allowed them to express their artistic talents.
Mrs. Johnson, the librarian at Spring City Elementary, expressed her pride in the students’ accomplishments. “It was wonderful to see the tree fill up with leaves as the year went on. The students were so excited to add their leaves each week, and it really motivated them to keep reading. The celebration with crafts was a fun way to acknowledge their hard work and dedication.”
The initiative not only promoted regular reading habits but also fostered a sense of community and shared achievement among the students. Parents and teachers noted the positive impact on the children’s reading skills and their enthusiasm for books.
“The reading activity has been a fantastic success,” said Principal Mark Harris. “It’s great to see our youngest students developing a love for reading. This program has helped build strong reading habits that will benefit them throughout their education. The leaf tree in the library is a wonderful visual reminder of what they can achieve when they work together.”
The leafy tree will remain a centerpiece in the library, serving as a lasting testament to the students’ dedication and a source of inspiration for future reading programs. As Spring City Elementary looks forward to the next school year, the success of this year’s reading initiative sets a high standard and promises even more innovative and engaging activities to foster a love of reading among its students.
