Gunnison Valley Hospital unveils new MRI wing

After five years of planning, approving, and one year of construction, the new MRI wing at Gunnison Valley Hospital Is now open and operating.
GUNNISON — After five years of planning and approvals and a year of construction, Gunnison Valley Hospital is celebrating the grand opening of its new MRI wing this month. This long-anticipated addition brings advanced imaging technology and enhanced patient comfort to the hospital.
“This is a long-awaited event!” said Gunnison Valley Hospital CEO Brenda Bartholomew. “We have wanted a fixed MRI machine in our hospital for years. This will help us better serve our patients.”
Cutting-edge technology and comfort
The centerpiece of the new wing is a state-of-the-art, wide-bore MRI machine. Unlike traditional MRI machines, the wide-bore design offers more space, reducing feelings of claustrophobia for patients. Enhancing the experience further is the Ambient Lighting Package, a system of projectors that create soothing visuals and make the MRI bore feel larger.
“Ambient lighting should decrease the need for sedation and make the entire MRI experience more comfortable,” Bartholomew said.
Radiology Manager Vicki McArthur expressed excitement about the expanded capabilities. “We are very excited to have an MRI suite added to the Radiology Department! We planned for this day eight years ago when we sent two of our Radiology Technologists to get their MRI Certification. This MRI will be a great addition to our Imaging Department and Gunnison Valley Hospital!”
A comprehensive imaging suite
The new wing features four distinct spaces: an MRI room, a monitoring room, a patient waiting area, and a recovery room.
Project manager and MRI technician Mike Wanner shared his enthusiasm about the project’s completion. “We have been looking forward to this project for many years now. It has been an honor to be a big part of this project. It isn’t every day that an MRI tech gets to manage his own MRI project. I am excited!”
Now open for patients
The MRI wing is now open and accepting new patients. Appointments can be scheduled by calling Gunnison Valley Hospital at 435-528-7246 and selecting the radiology department. Operations are expected to begin around December 10th.
