Utah launches Every Kid Outdoors adventure challenge to inspire youth exploration

Event attendees receive a reusable water bottle to decorate with stickers earned by completing each monthly challenge. At the end of 2025, participants who complete all the challenges will be entered into a grand prize drawing. The initiative emphasizes accessibility with events spread across the state, including activities like ice skating, wildlife observation, stargazing and camping.
The Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation has kicked off the Every Kid Outdoors Adventure Challenge, a year-long initiative aimed at reconnecting Utah’s youth with the great outdoors. Designed to encourage children and families to embrace nature, the program features monthly challenges and events that promote outdoor skills, family bonding, and a lifelong appreciation for Utah’s natural wonders.
The Adventure Challenge is free and open to all children in Utah. Participants receive a reusable water bottle, which they can decorate with stickers earned by completing monthly challenges. At the end of the year, those who complete all challenges will be entered into a grand prize drawing. The program features events across the state, from ice skating and wildlife observation to stargazing and camping, ensuring accessibility and variety for families statewide.
“We are thrilled to introduce the Adventure Challenge as a way to inspire the next generation to explore the incredible natural wonders Utah has to offer,” said Caroline Weiler, youth engagement manager for the DOR. “These monthly challenges are more than just fun–they’re an opportunity for families to connect, for children to gain confidence, and for communities to foster a deeper appreciation for our natural world.”
Kickoff Event at Millcreek Common
The program officially launched with a celebration at Millcreek Common on January 24. Families enjoyed free ice skating, wildlife identification workshops, and nature journaling. More than 25 outdoor organizations participated, offering hands-on activities and information about Utah’s outdoor programs. Partners such as the Utah Hockey Club, Ski Utah, Teton Sports, and the US Forest Service showcased resources like free National Parks passes for 4th graders and discounted skiing opportunities.
Upcoming Adventure Challenge events
The EKO Adventure Challenge promises a diverse lineup of monthly activities throughout 2025. Highlights include:
- Frosty Fun: Cross-country skiing at Soldier Hollow, Feb. 21, 2-4 p.m.
- Utah Rocks!: Bouldering at climbing gyms statewide, March 21, 2-3:30 p.m. (free admission and rentals).
- Starry Skies: Stargazing and sandboarding at Coral Pink Sand Dunes, April 25, 7-10:30 p.m.
- Plant a Seed: Gardening workshops in May (time and location TBD).
- Family Camping: A multi-day camping experience at TIFIE Ranch, June 26-29, with equipment and food provided.
Additional activities will follow monthly through December, ensuring year-round excitement.
Encouraging a Love for Nature
Adventure Challenge builds on the 2019 Every Kid Outdoors legislative initiative, which addresses the growing disconnect between children and nature. Studies show that time outdoors enhances physical health, creativity, and problem-solving skills while reducing stress. By making outdoor activities accessible and enjoyable, the challenge aims to promote healthier lifestyles and cultivate a new generation of outdoor enthusiasts and stewards.
