Spring City honors Mary Holmstead as 2025 Citizen of the Year
Mary Holmstead
A lifetime of service, compassion, and unwavering dedication to community and family has earned Mary Holmstead the title of Spring City’s 2025 Citizen of the Year.
Born and raised in Mt. Pleasant, Mary grew up in a close-knit family with three sisters and one brother. Today, she and her younger sister Fae are the only ones remaining, a bond that has strengthened Mary’s deep appreciation for family and has shaped her nurturing spirit.
Mary has called Spring City home for most of her adult life, with the exception of a brief period spent wintering in Wickenburg, Arizona. Her roots in the community run deep — her ancestry traces back to James Allred, one of the early settlers of Spring City. Her love for Sanpete Valley and its people is evident in the way she serves and connects with those around her.
Throughout her career, Mary has been a dedicated advocate for students with disabilities in the local school district. Her compassionate heart and steady guidance helped countless young people learn, grow, and succeed in environments where they might have otherwise struggled. She made it her mission to ensure that every child felt valued and supported.
In the earlier years of her life, Mary and her first husband owned and operated a neighborhood grocery store — a cozy, community-centered business nestled near the current mercantile store in Spring City. They sold the store in 1968, but the impact it had on the community and Mary’s continued presence never faded.
Mary later married her beloved husband, Lee Holmstead, finding joy in caring for him during his final years. Her life has been a testament to enduring love and quiet strength. A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she has always anchored her life in faith. Her testimony of Jesus Christ has guided her every step, and she has remained an active and committed member of the church throughout her life.
Whether she is fulfilling a church calling, lending a helping hand in the community, or caring for her home and family, Mary gives her all — every single time. “She doesn’t know what it means to do something halfway,” said one neighbor. “Everything she does, she does with her whole heart.”
But perhaps Mary’s greatest joy and enduring legacy is her family. A devoted mother of five, grandmother of 23, great-grandmother of 56, and great-great-grandmother of four (with another on the way), she treasures every moment spent with her loved ones. Her warmth, love, and steadfast support are constants in the lives of her family members, and her example continues to inspire generations.
“Her kindness, strength, and faith are what make her such a powerful influence in our lives,” said one family member. “We all love her very much.”
As Spring City recognizes Mary Holmstead as Citizen of the Year, the community also celebrates a life of dedication — to faith, to service, and most of all, to family. Her legacy is one of quiet heroism and enduring love, and Spring City is all the better for it.
