Centracom partners to provide fiber internet to office, retail, and residential offerings.

FAIRVIEW — CentraCom has announced the acquisition of Gunnison Telephone Company, a move company officials say will strengthen broadband and telecommunications services for residents and businesses throughout southern Sanpete County.

The transaction officially closed on July 1, 2026, subject to customary regulatory approvals, according to an announcement released by CentraCom on July 30.

The acquisition brings together two telecommunications companies with deep roots in rural Utah. Gunnison Telephone has served the communities of Gunnison, Centerfield, Mayfield, Fayette and surrounding unincorporated areas of Sanpete County for more than a century, providing telephone, broadband and fixed wireless services to approximately 6,700 residents in 1,576 households.

CentraCom, doing business as Central Utah Telephone Inc., was founded in 1903 as Utah’s first independent rural telephone company. Today, the company operates a statewide fiber network and provides broadband, telecommunications, video and related services to customers in both rural and metropolitan areas across Utah.

CentraCom President and CEO Brad Welch said the acquisition represents an important investment in the future of the Gunnison Valley.

“Gunnison Telephone has served its customers with dedication for more than 100 years, and we are honored to build upon that legacy,” Welch said. “By combining our statewide fiber network with Gunnison’s local expertise, we can expand advanced broadband services and help these communities thrive in an increasingly connected world.”

Gunnison Telephone operates a communications network that includes fiber-to-the-premises, traditional copper infrastructure and fixed wireless technology, serving both residential and commercial customers throughout the region.

Jim Sanders, general manager of Gunnison Telephone Company, said the partnership will allow the company to continue its longstanding commitment to local communities while expanding the services available to customers.

“Gunnison Telephone has always been about supporting our neighbors and ensuring that our rural communities have the services they need to grow,” Sanders said. “Partnering with CentraCom allows us to bring even greater innovation and reliability to our customers, while preserving the commitment to community that has defined Gunnison Telephone since the very beginning.”

Company officials say the acquisition will position the region to benefit from expanded broadband infrastructure and future technological investments. Improved connectivity is expected to support economic development while enhancing educational opportunities, healthcare access and overall quality of life for residents throughout southern Sanpete County.

CentraCom officials noted that combining the company’s statewide fiber network with Gunnison Telephone’s established local infrastructure and customer relationships will create opportunities to deliver faster, more reliable telecommunications services while maintaining a local focus.

Gunnison Telephone has long been a familiar presence in southern Sanpete County, serving generations of customers as communications technology has evolved from traditional telephone service to today’s high-speed internet and wireless connectivity. The company will now become part of CentraCom’s growing network of telecommunications operations across Utah.

CentraCom is the operating name of Central Utah Telephone Inc., while Gunnison Telephone Company has been a subsidiary of LICT Corporation, a telecommunications holding company that owns broadband and communications providers throughout the United States.
