The annual promotion will be offered at the Lee Kay Public Shooting Range in Salt Lake City and the Cache Valley Public Shooting Range in Logan. Licensed hunters and anglers can take advantage of free access to rifle, handgun and archery facilities throughout the day.

The offer also includes one free round of trap, skeet or five-stand sporting clays at either range.

National Hunting and Fishing Day is observed across the country on the fourth Saturday of September. In Utah, the day was designated in state code in 1973 to recognize the significant contribution hunters and anglers make toward the conservation and management of the state’s wildlife.

“Hunters and anglers are the backbone of wildlife conservation in the U.S.,” DWR Director Riley Peck said. “The discounts at these shooting ranges are a small token of our appreciation to hunters and anglers for funding crucial wildlife projects that help maintain healthy populations of a variety of wildlife species in Utah.”

How to Get the Free Shooting

Taking advantage of the promotion is simple. Visitors need to show a valid Utah hunting, fishing or combination license when they arrive at either facility on Sept. 26.

Both paper and electronic licenses will be accepted. Electronic Utah licenses can be downloaded and stored through the Utah Hunting and Fishing app.

The promotion provides an opportunity for hunters to practice before the upcoming hunting seasons, but the ranges aren’t just for hunters.

“These are some of the best shooting range facilities in Utah, whether you are practicing for an upcoming hunt or you just want to have some fun shooting targets,” said Gary Cook, DWR Hunter Education, Ranges and Shooting Sports Programs Coordinator.

Cook also noted that shooting sports can be an activity for the entire family.

“Since our ranges and programs are funded through excise taxes from the purchase of shooting equipment and ammunition, as well as the sale of hunting and fishing licenses, we proudly celebrate National Hunting and Fishing Day as a way to thank those who support us,” he said.

Two Locations

The Lee Kay Public Shooting Range is located at 6000 W. 2100 South in Salt Lake City.

The Cache Valley Public Shooting Range is located at 2851 W. 200 North in Logan.

In addition to the National Hunting and Fishing Day promotion, both facilities offer a year-round program for customers who have recently purchased a firearm or archery equipment. Individuals who purchase qualifying equipment from a store within 30 days of visiting the range may be eligible for free or discounted shooting. Proof of purchase is required.
