BYU's MacKenzee Vance played a key role in her team's thrilling shootout win over TCU in the Big 12 tournament on Monday.

The BYU women’s soccer team advanced to the Big 12 Conference Soccer Tournament semifinals in Fort Worth, Texas, after tying top-seeded TCU 2-2 and advancing on penalty kicks, 4-3.

BYU junior goalkeeper Chelsea Peterson made eight saves and stood tall in the the penalty kicks in what was her first start as a Cougar, stepping in after Paiton Collins was injured in the regular-season finale.

Ellie Walbruch scored a brace for the Cougars, her 12th and 13th goals of the season. Both goals were unassisted.

The BYU defense came up big, especially late in the game as TCU applied pressure, highlighted by game-saving clearances by Emma Neff in overtime.

The eighth-seeded Cougars now advance to the semifinals, facing a fifth-seeded Baylor team that also picked up an upset victory in the first round in PKs. The match will take place at 3:30 p.m. MST on Wednesday and can be viewed on ESPN+.

First half

BYU had the first chance on goal in the fifth minute as Mackenzee Vance fired off a shot from outside the 18-yard box that hit off the post wide.

In the 11th minute, TCU broke through the Cougar backline and took a shot, punched out by the outstretched arm of Peterson.

Walbruch cut through the TCU defense and had a shot on frame, right into the arms of the Horned Frogs goalkeeper in the 18th minute.

The match continued with more back-and-forth possession and TCU responded with a shot in the 21st minute, collected by Peterson.

In the 27th minute, Walbruch intercepted a TCU pass and blasted a long shot from the top of the arc that soared past the keeper, into the top left corner of the net, giving BYU the 1-0 lead.

BYU held possession in the final minutes of the first half, going into the locker room with a 1-0 lead. It was the first time since Oct. 10 that TCU went into halftime trailing.

Second half

Just two minutes into the second half, a handball was called on BYU right on the edge of the box, deemed inside of it by the referee, giving the Horned Frogs a penalty kick, which they converted for the equalizer to make it 1-1.

BYU responded quickly. In the 51st minute, the Cougars were awarded a free kick on the left side of the pitch just outside the 18. Walbruch took the kick and curved it over the goaltender, off the far post and into the net for her second goal of the match, retaking the lead, 2-1.

Mika Krommenhoek took her first shot of the match from the top of the arc in the 54th minute, missing just high over the crossbar.

In the 61st minute, Afton Perry won a ball in the six and took a shot, saved by the TCU keeper. The Horned Frogs responded immediately with a shot of their own, missing high and wide.

TCU found its second equalizer of the match with a goal in the 70th minute, as AJ Hennessey got behind the BYU defense and beat Peterson one-on-one, bringing the score to 2-2.

In the 74th minute, the Horned Frogs had a corner kick that found the head of a TCU forward, hit off the crossbar and cleared out.

TCU’s offense continued to press, taking two more shots, one saved by Peterson and the other missing wide.

The Horned Frogs earned a corner kick with three minutes remaining in the match, cleared out by BYU’s backline.

After 90 minutes of the play, the match was tied 2-2, so the teams headed to the first of two 10-minute overtime periods.

Overtime

TCU had the first shot of the overtime period off a cross right in front of the net, kicked over the crossbar.

BYU’s Mia Lopez had a chance in the box and was taken down by a TCU defender. The play went to video review, with the Cougars poised to take a penalty kick, but the referee let the play stand after the review and play continued.

The Horned Frogs had two more chances on goal, both cleared off the goal line by BYU defender Emma Neff.

The first overtime period ended in a 2-2 draw, leading to a second overtime period.

The second overtime period consisted of a lot of back-and-forth between the two teams, with only one shot by TCU, blocked by BYU’s defense.

Each team had five players lined up to take penalty kicks.

TCU converted its first two penalty kicks, and BYU’s Mackenzee Vance and Walbruch scored theirs.
