“Coal Bed” set to celebrate Welsh Days

By Staff | May 21, 2014

The quiet town of Wales, originally named ‘Coal Bed,’ due to the coal mines operated by immigrants from Wales, will get a bit rowdier for the annual Welsh Days, scheduled to be held Friday and Saturday, June 27 and 28, in the city park.

The name, Coal Bed was changed to Wales in 1869. There once was a railroad depot and it was an important and busy mining center. The mines and town were abandoned when more productive mines were discovered in Scofield. Many of the present residents are descendants of the original miners.

Festivities begin June 27, at 4 p.m., with the Jr. Strongman contest for youth ages 12 through 18. The children’s fun run will begin at 6 p.m., and the quilt raffle drawing will take place at 6:30 p.m. Unlike most raffles, ticket holders do not need to be present to win the beautiful, handmade quilt.

At 7 p.m., the town will provide the main course for the annual potluck dinner. Those planning to attend are asked to bring a favorite dish to share. The ever-popular Junction 89 will entertain from 8:30 to 11 p.m.

Sleep fast and be ready to register for the 5k fun run at 6:30 a.m., with the run beginning at 7 p.m. For those folks not into running, there will be a flag raising ceremony at 7:45 a.m., followed by breakfast sponsored by the Wales Town Council at 8 a.m. Also at 8 a.m., strong man registration will take place.

Relax and enjoy the mammoth parade at 10 a.m. and then go watch the strong man competition at 10:30 a.m. There will be strong man T-shirts available for purchase.

From 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., take a break and watch the kids enjoying children’s games before lunch from Noon to 2 p.m., with hamburgers and hot dogs. Sit and visit with old friends and maybe even a few new ones.

Starting at $4.32/week.
