Palisade State Park features many outdoor adventure avenues
In the 1860s, Daniel B. Funk, an early settler of the surrounding Sanpete Valley, had the idea of a summer and weekend resort area. At that time, the valley was owned by a small group of Sanpitch Indians led by Chief Arapeen. Daniel B. Funk bargained with the chief and obtained a land patent from the government. He and his family then set about the arduous task of building a dam and diverting part of Sixmile Creek to fill the lake. The lake quickly became a well-known pleasure resort, now called Palisade.
Summer recreation includes camping, fishing, swimming, electric motor and non-motorized boating, golfing and hiking. Off-highway vehicle trails are accessible from the park.
The 18-hole golf course has some of the best putting greens in the state. A PGA professional provides a full range of services and supplies at the newly remodeled pro shop. Golf Professional Casey Fowels may be contacted at 435-835-4653.
Opened to the public as a state park in 1962. Park elevation is 5,800 feet.
The golf course measures 6,360 yards from the back tee markers but plays longer because all the par-5s play uphill. However, the golf course will challenge even the most advanced player because of the difficulties encountered around the greens. The mountain layout has an elevation change of 230 feet from 5885 feet at the base to 6115 at the top.
Though its expansive undulating greens are truly a test, the greatest challenge may be signature hole number 4. This 179-yard par-3 has an elevation drop of 70 feet and requires golfers to carry the ball over a canyon, and land it precisely on the green.
A ball hit too long will hit into the mountain behind the green and ricochet anywhere. On the other hand, a ball hit too short will certainly come to rest in the canyon below. The Salt Lake Tribune has likened this hole to the famous 12th at Augusta National and the Deseret News had it on its “Best Holes” list for 2005.
Clubhouse amenities include golf shop, restaurant, club rental, clothing, equipment, and accessories, food and beverages, private and group lessons, driving range and cart rental. Tee times may be made seven days in advance.
Views and vistas of the natural surrounding are stunning. Many golfers use their cameras as much as their clubs. In addition to golf, Palisade State Park offers boating, camping, fishing, hiking, off-highway vehicle access, and a variety of other activities.
Camping is available for single units and groups. There are sites for tents and RVs and new cabins offer all the comforts of home. Boating is allowed with electric motors, along with sailing, kayaking and canoeing. OHV and ATV riding is allowed on approved trails. Machines may be rented in Sterling and Fairview.
There are hiking trails, windsurfing, paddle boarding and swimming; bird watching and much more. The park is an ideal site for family reunions, corporate outings and group camping.
