There’s No Time Like Fair Time
Summer months rush by and now it is once again time for the Sanpete County Fair. Kids, and parents, are anxious for school to start but first head to Manti for fun at the fair.
Events begin July 19, with the Miss Sanpete Pageant, at North Sanpete High School at 8 p.m. Contact Salinda Horrocks, (801) 819-3422. The new royalty will reign over festivities throughout the fair and participate in other events in the county.
Fair tickets go on sale at Noon, Wednesday, Aug. 6, at Beck’s Home Furnishings, Mt. Pleasant; Mt. Man Outdoors, Ephraim; Sanpete County Building Inspector’s Office, Manti; and Ace Hardware, Gunnison.
Rodeo entry call-ins will be accepted Thursday, Aug. 14, at RMPRA office, (719) 486-0599 or at www.rmpraonline.com. There will be a 4H horse show registration at 4 p.m., with horse show test at 4:30 p.m., followed at 5 p.m., by the 4H horse show at the fairground arena. Contact Lynsey Zeeman at (307) 871-9030.
Jr. Rodeo will be held at 6 p.m., Friday, Aug. 15. Call Carrie Alsop, 835-2652 for additional information or details.
Saturday, Aug. 16, the fair goes into full swing at 8 a.m., with the Sanpete County open horse show in the arena. Books close at 7:30 a.m. There will be open swimming at the Aquatic Center beginning at 10 a.m. Also a Bunco Tournament, baby contest and Little Miss Pageant will all be held at 10 a.m.
From 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., the annual Sanpete Outdoor Expo and cooking will be at the Home Trade Show and at 1 p.m., the Dutch oven cook-off will be held. Open class and 4 H projects will be accepted from Noon to 6 p.m., at the Exhibit Building, except baked goods, vegetables and floral entries..
Sunday, Aug. 17 is the last day to register 4H projects for the Exhibit Building. Also, hometown entries for hide races will be accepted from 12 to 6 p.m., by calling Wendy Jensen, (435) 469-1296.
Open class and 4 H baked goods and vegetables will be accepted from 3 to 6 p.m., Monday, Aug. 18, at the Exhibit Building and at 7 p.m., there will be team sorting in the arena.
Wednesday, Aug. 20 begins a full day at the fair, beginning with open class florals being accepted from 9 to 11 a.m., at the Exhibit Building. Small animal barn entries are received from 12 to 5 p.m.
The Exhibit Building opens to the public at 2 p.m., and remains open until 7 p.m. Lamb, swine and market beef receiving, weigh-in and Jr. livestock testing will take place between 5 and 8 p.m.
The annual Farm Bureau Talent Night will be held at 7 p.m., at Manti High School and Pee-Wee motor barrel racing will stir up the dirt in the fairground arena. From 7 to 9 p.m., pet owners may pre-register for the pet show, limited to the first 50 entries. Contact Carrie Alsop, 835-2552 for details.
At 8:30 a.m., the swine judging and showmanship will take place Thursday, Aug. 21, followed by beef judging and showmanship at 10 a.m. Exhibit Building will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Small animal poster contest entries will be taken from 12 to 5:30 p.m. and at 1 p.m., the market lamb fitting and showmanship will take place.
At 4 p.m., Brown’s Amusements opens for thrills, food, games of all sorts and information on the midway. Open class showmanship for non-4H and FFA participants age four and under and also ages five through seven. Local talent will show their stuff from 4 until 6:30 p.m., in the pavilion and Fun on the Farm is open from 4 until 7 p.m.
Rabbit and poultry judging will be at 5:30 p.m., but is closed to the public. Over in the arena, be sure to have a seat to watch the little buckaroos take part in the mutton bustin’ at 7 p.m. Rodeo grand entry takes place at 7:45 p.m., followed by Broken Heart Rodeo Company RMPRA Rodeo at 8 p.m.
Friday, Aug. 22, begins early with the annual antique tractor show from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. followed by dairy judging at 9 a.m. Beef judging and showmanship is at 11 a.m. and the Exhibit Building opens.
At 2 p.m., the open class pet show will take place in the pavilion. Entries must have been pre-registered by Aug. 20. Brown’s Amusement’s opens on the midway at 2 p.m. and local talent shows at the pavilion ends at 7 p.m., and Fun on the Farm also closes at 7 p.m.
Have a good seat saved along Manti Main Street from 6 to 7 p.m., for Cruzin’ the Sanpete County Fair and then scoot over to the arena for the ‘rock’em, sock’em demolition derby at 7:30 p.m. Participants have been working on, and hiding, cars all year to make sure their entry is the best of the best.
Final day of the fair is Saturday, Aug. 23. Things get going with sign-up at 6 a.m. for the 5k Fun Run, sponsored by Sanpete Valley Hospital, at 100 East 450 North. The run begins at 7 a.m.
At 8 a.m., there will be the annual EMT breakfast at the pavilion, the antique tractor and farm equipment show and sign-up for the car show. Signups ends at 10 a.m. There will be tractor games in the arena at 9 a.m., the livestock buyers breakfast and mud volleyball at the mud pit. The game is limited to eight teams and runs until 1 p.m. Contact Tara Alder at (435) 851-9095.
At 10 a.m., the livestock sale will be held at the large animal barn; the car show at 500 North Main; Willie the Clown Show until 11 a.m.; Science Alliance Exhibit will remain open until 7 p.m.; 4H public speaking and talent performance until 3 p.m.; local talent who at the pavilion will take place until 4 p.m.; and Fun on the Farm until 7 p.m.
The Home depot workshop will take place at 10:30 p.m. and the Exhibit Building opens from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Save those taste buds for the Cattleman’s Association beef dinner at Noon at the pavilion and Brown’s Amusements opens on the midway.
Over in the arena, take a rest and enjoy team pulling with the incredible animals and handlers from around the state at 1 p.m. The mud scramble for cash and prizes will be at 2 p.m., for youngsters ages three through 10.
At 3 p.m., 4 H volunteers will be recognized in a ceremony held at the Exhibit Building and a pie eating contest at the pavilion at 3:30 p.m. The car show award presentation will take place at 4 p.m., followed by the mammoth parade on Main Street at 5 p.m.
Mutton bustin’ in the arena at 7 p.m.; Rodeo grand entry at 7:45 p.m. and RMPRA Rodeo at 8 p.m. to bring another Sanpete County fair to a close.
Monday, Aug. 25, people may pick up fair entries and prizes from the Exhibit Building between 3 and 6 p.m.
