Celebrating 101 years of tradition at Sanpete County Fairgrounds

Sanpete residents and ‘out-of-towners’ will congregate in Manti this August to celebrate 101 years of tradition at the annual Sanpete County Fair.

Tickets for the fair go on sale Monday, Aug. 3, at Beck’s Home Furnishings, Mt. Pleasant; T&R Sports, Ephraim; Sanpete Building Inspector’s Office, Manti; Ace Hardware and Gunnison Market, Gunnison.

Events start to take place Tuesday, Aug. 6, with the Outstanding Teen and Lil Miss Pageant at 6 p.m., in the Manti High School Auditorium. The next day, Aug. 7, at 6 p.m., beauties will strut their stuff and wow judges at the annual Miss Sanpete Scholarship Pageant, also at Manti High School.

On Thursday, Aug. 20, rodeo participants may call in to the RMPRA office at 719-486-0599 or go to www.rmpraonline.com. At 4 p.m., 4-H members may register for the horse show and display their abilities at the horse show at 5 p.m., in the rodeo arena.

Things start to heat up Friday, Aug. 21, with a junior rodeo at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, an open horse show will begin the day at 8 a.m. and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., be sure to attend the annual Sanpete Outdoor Expo and Family Focus Home Show.

At Noon, there will be open swimming at Manti City pool and from 12 to 6 p.m., open class and 4-H entries, except baked goods, vegetables and florals, will be accepted at the Exhibit Building. Satisfy those hunger pangs at the Dutch oven cook-off at 1 p.m. New this year is a firemen’s challenge at 7 p.m.

Sunday, Aug. 23 is the last day to register 4-H projects at the Exhibit Building and hometown entries for the hide races will be accepted from 6 to 9 p.m., by calline 435-469-0296.

Momentum gains speed Monday, Aug. 24, from 3 to 6 p.m., as 4-H entries and open class baked goods and vegetables are accepted at the Exhibit Building, except garden entries. Over at Manti High School, there will be cowboy poetry and music festival beginning at 7 p.m.

4-H garden entries will be accepted from 9 to 10 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 25 and then the building will be closed for judging. Team sorting will take place at 6 p.m., in the fairgrounds rodeo arena.

Wednesday, Aug. 26, from 9 to 11 a.m., people can enter open class florals at the Exhibit Building. The building will be open to the public from 2 to 7 p.m. Lamb, swine and market beef will be received and weighed in from 5 to 8 p.m. Junior livestock will also be tested in that time frame.

Back over at the high school, is the ever-popular Farm Bureau talent night at 7 p.m. And at the arena, Pee Wee motor barrel racing will fill the night air with dust and noise. From 7 to 9 p.m., pre-registration for the annual pet show will take place with entry limited to 50 participants.

Get into full swing Thursday, Aug. 27 to attend the swine judging and showmanship at 9 a.m. From 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., enjoy strolling through the Exhibit Building to see the wide variety of crafts, garden and floral displays entered by the talented county folks.

Small animal poster contest entries will be taken from 2 to 5:30 p.m., and lamb jusging and showmanship will be held at 1 p.m.

Don’t miss all the fun and excitement offered on the midway by Brown’s Amusements. Open class showmanship for non-4-H and FFA for kids age seven and under. Over at the pavilion, local talent show ends at 7 p.m.

Fun on the Farm Exhibit will be open from 4 to 7 p.m., for kids to experience some of the adventures offered by a farm, such as picking fruit and vegetables and planting seeds.

At 6 p.m., little buckaroos take part in mutton bustin’ as they hang on for dear life to the back of a mutton that doesn’t want them there. The rodeo grand entry will be in the arena at 6:45 p.m., prior to the RMPRA Rodeo, featuring Broken Heart Rodeo Company at 7 p.m.

Friday, Aug. 28 events get underway from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with an antique tractor show and the small animal barn opens. Dairy judging will take place at 9 a.m., followed at 10 a.m., with rabbit, poultry and pigeon judging, which is open to the public.

Beef judging and showmanship will be at 1 p.m., and the open class pet show at the pavilion at 2 p.m. Entrants for the pet show must have pre-registered Aug. 26 to be eligible to participate. Brown’s Amusements opens at 3 p.m., on the midway.

Local talent shows at the pavilion ends at 7 p.m. Something new this year is a Cruise Night Sock Hop at Miller’s Drive-in beginning at 6 p.m. Hope everyone has tickets for the bump, grind and crash-em demolition derby at 7 p.m., in the arena.

The final day of the fair, Saturday, Aug. 29, begins early with a 5K Fun Run registration at 100 East 450 North, at 6 a.m., with the run beginning at 7 a.m. Head on over to the pavilion for the EMT breakfast at 8 a.m. The small animal barn opens at 8 a.m., and the antique tractor, farm equipment goes from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sign ups for the car show ends at 10 a.m.

There will be tractor games in the arena at 9 a.m., a livestock buyer’s breakfast and mud volleyball at the mud pit. The event is limited to eight teams.

At 10 a.m., there will be a livestock sale at the large animal barn; car show at 500 North Main; local talent show at the pavilion until 4 p.m.; Fun on the Farm until 7 p.m., and Willie the Clown shows until 11 a.m.

A workshop sponsored by Horseshoe Mountain Home Center will begin at 10:30 a.m.; the Exhibit Building opens from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Cattleman’s Association beef dinner at the pavilion at Noon, along with Brown’s Amusements on the midway and small animal awards will be hended out.

In the arena, take time to sit, visit and enjoy the large, majestic animals as they participate in the horse pulling competition at 1 p.m. Watch little ones, age three to 10 dive and scramble in the mud for cash prizes.

Watch or enter the pie eating contest at 3:30 p.m., at the pavilion and be on hand at 4 p.m., for the car show award presentations. Better have a spot reserved for the mammoth parade on Main Street at 5 p.m., before going over to the arena for more mutton bustin’ at 7 p.m.

The rodeo grand entry will take place at 7:45 p.m., to make way for the RMPRA Rodeo to end the day.

Monday, Aug. 31, is the day people can pick up their items and prizes from 3 to 6 p.m., at the Exhibit Building and say good-bye for another year.
