Heritage Day, historic home tours

By Staff | May 17, 2017

The Friends of Historic Spring City announce the annual Spring City Heritage Day, on Saturday, May 27. This event includes a tour of many of the town’s charming, mid-19th Century pioneer homes and buildings, mini concert performances, an art auction, antique sale, handcrafted wares, breakfast and lunch.

Spring City leads the way in historic preservation and restoration in Utah. The entire town was designated a national historic district in the late 1970s, and since that time, over 60 local historical structures have been carefully and lovingly restored. Today, Spring City is widely considered the best preserved example of a 19th Century Pioneer village in the entire country.

This preservation includes the beautiful Old Spring City School, which, after nearly 40 years of persistent effort, is finally complete! A dedicatory celebration will be held on Friday, May 26, at 1 p.m. Later on from 5 – 8 p.m. visitors are welcome to preview both antiques and original art works that are for sale in the Old School. There is an entrance fee.

The renovated building will be now known as the Old School Community Center, 45 South 100 East, Spring City. It will be used as an event center, museum, and city office space. The second floor will include a large ballroom for receptions and community programs, plus art and cultural events.

Saturday, May 27, Breakfast will be served in the city park, behind the Old School from 8-10 a.m. Coffee will be available until 11 a.m. Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., at the historic Spring City LDS Chapel, 164 South Main Street.

The annual antique sale will be from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., in the Old School and will be followed by the annual Art Squared silent auction held at 2 p.m., where patrons can bid on one-foot square paintings by well-known Spring City artists, including Lee Bennion, Susan Gallacher, M’Lisa Paulsen, Doug Fryer, Kathleen Peterson, Cassandria Parsons, Lynn Farrar, Ken Baxter, and other Utah artists.

Additional works by other well-known artists will also be on sale at the Old School, and in local galleries.

Brian Stucki, world renowned tenor, will be providing free mini-concerts at 11 a.m., 12 noon, and 1 p.m. inside the historic Spring City LDS Ward, 164 South Main.

There will be 25 historic pioneer buildings open to the public this year, including the old Bishop’s Storehouse, the old pioneer chapel on Main Street, Victory Hall, and 18 private homes.

Historic home tour hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and tickets may be purchased at the Old School Community Center, 45 South 100 East, or at the Main Street Firehouse.

There will also be many craft-booths along Main Street, displaying and selling locally handcrafted wares and artisanal fare.

Spring City is just east of Highway 89, between Mt. Pleasant and Ephraim.

Starting at $4.32/week.
