Spring City events fun for all

Spring City leads the way in historic preservation and restoration in Utah. It is also home to several events this summer. Heritage Day returns, Pioneer Day celebrations, Bluegrass Festival, Plein Air Art Competition and artist studio tours.

Heritage Day May 25

Heritage Day will be celebrated all day long on Saturday, May 25, at the Spring City Community Center (SCCC), 45 South 100 East, and the City Park just south of the building. Breakfast will be available from 8-10 a.m., coffee from 8-11 a.m.

A bake sale will take place at 8:30 a.m., at the Main Street Museum, 46 North Main. The Main Street Museum houses most of the historical records for research in Spring City. It is open from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday and by appointment. For more information call Carla Nelson (940) 224-0857 or Kaye Watson (435) 462-2211.

The annual “Art Squared” silent art auction will be held at the SCCC from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Patrons can bid on one-foot square paintings by well-known Spring City artists. Art buyers can bid on the paintings anytime, but must be present at 2 p.m. as the auction ends. Additional works will also be on sale at the Spring City Art Gallery, 79 South Main Street.

Also at 9 a.m., an antique sale will be held on the third floor of the SCCC. There will be many craft-booths, displaying and selling a variety of locally handcrafted wares and artisanal fare.

While visiting the SCCC, be sure to check out the Daughters of Utah Pioneers (DUP) Museum. It is normally open Monday thru Thursday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., but will be open on Heritage Day.

Historic home tours, a tour of many of Spring City’s charming, mid-19th Century pioneer homes and buildings will be available from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the SCCC or the Main Street Firehouse, $10 Adult; $5 Children.

Lunch will be available from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Spring City Ward, 164 South Main, which is on the historic register and worth seeing.

At 3 p.m., a free 30-minute concert featuring Brian Stucki, world renowned tenor, will take place in the historic Spring City church, 164 South Main.

Pioneer Days July 20-24

Pioneer Days, for Spring City, will take place July 20-24. The evening of Saturday, July 20, come to the city park, 100 East 50 South, for a concert featuring “Fiddle Express.” While there check out the Ice Cream Social. Best bring a chair to rest in while enjoying the evening.

Sunday, July 21, all locals and visitors are welcome to enjoy some music during the Old Time Gospel Music Revival, 7 p.m., in the Spring City Bowery, 100 East 50 South. Folks will need to bring own chairs.

On Monday, July 22, from 8-10 p.m., the annual Family Street Dance will take place on Main Street. This year the band will be “Rock of Ages.”

Wednesday, July 24, is Utah’s Pioneer Day. Spring City festivities will begin with a Fun Run/Walk at 7 a.m., starting at the park. From 7-9 a.m., the Fireman’s Breakfast will be available for the hungry.

Be sure to check out the Main Street Museum, 46 North Main, which will be open from 9 a.m.-12 noon, or stroll down with chairs to Main Street where the annual Mammoth Parade will begin at 10 a.m. No parking is allowed on Main Street.

After the parade there will be fun and games in the park for all ages from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The activities will include a sidewalk chalk art contest, music by “Hired Guns,” lunch in the park, watermelon bust and hand-made craft vendors.

During the fun and games, from 11-3 p.m., the Daughters of Utah Pioneers (DUP) Museum, will be open, located within the Spring City Community Center, 45 South 100 East. Then, later in the evening, at 7 p.m., will be the presentation of the Saga of Spring City in the city park. Bring chairs.

Bluegrass, Folk Festival Aug. 2-3

Visitors should plan to come back to Spring City in August for the Bluegrass and Folk Festival which takes place on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 2-3, at the Old School Community Center and city park, 100 East 50 South. There will be music, art, crafts, food and a motor show.

This year, 3hattrio, Molly in the Mineshaft, Lincoln Highway, Mary Kaye and Millie, Matt Harding Band, Snow Bluegrass, and many more performers are scheduled on Friday and Saturday. To see the full list or for festival details, visit www.springcitybluegrass.org.

Saturday, Aug. 3, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., there will be a Motor Show. Any car, truck, tractor, or motorcycle older than 1977 will get one free ticket to the MUSIC portion of the festival. Judging will be overall, first, second and third place.

Plein Air Aug. 24-31

Later on in August, the Plein Air Painting Competition begins Saturday, Aug. 24, at 7 a.m. and continues for a full week, after which the paintings are all turned in on Friday, Aug. 30, at 2 p.m., for judging. Later that day, from 7-9 p.m., the Plein Air Art Show Preview and reception for the artists and visitors will be held at Spring City Arts Gallery, 79 South Main. Competition winners will be announced and paintings will be available for purchase.

Then on Saturday, Aug. 31, from dawn till 10 a.m., a Quick Paint event will be held on Spring City’s Main Street. All of the art created during the morning Quick Paint event will be then sold in an auction from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m., at the gallery.

From 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Plein Air art will be exhibited at the gallery and on sale.

During the Saturday events, there will be artist studio tours available. From 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Studio Tour tickets will be available at the Spring City Art Gallery, 79 South Main. Ticket purchase includes a map to help find the artist studios.

Tours will begin at 10:30 a.m., and will continue through 4:30 p.m. It’s a great opportunity to get an insight into the life of an artist. Additional artistic works of art will be available at most of the locales.
