WCC schedule set for BYU basketball

BYU’s 2022-23 West Coast Conference 16-game men’s basketball schedule was released Tuesday by the conference.

The Cougars open WCC play with three of their first four games on the road beginning with a trip to Stockton, Calif. to face Pacific on Dec. 29. After hosting Portland on New Year’s Eve, BYU travels to Loyola Marymount on Jan. 5 and San Diego on Jan. 7.

BYU returns home to the friendly confines of the Marriott Center for a pair of games beginning with a showdown against Gonzaga on Jan. 12. That is followed up with a game against Pepperdine on Jan. 14, where the Cougars will look to win their seventh straight over the Waves in Provo.

A trip to the Bay Area to face Santa Clara (Jan. 19) and San Francisco (Jan. 21) is followed by a three-game home stand. BYU will look for its third straight home win over Saint Mary’s on Jan. 28 before hosting LMU (Feb. 2) and Pacific (Feb. 4).

They make the return trip to Malibu, Calif. on Feb. 9 to face Pepperdine before heading up to Spokane, Wash. one final time in WCC play to take on the Zags on Feb. 11.

Santa Clara makes their first trip to Provo in three years on Feb. 16 followed the Cougars final road game of the season on Feb. 18 at Saint Mary’s. They conclude the regular season on Feb. 25 at home against San Francisco.

Tip off times and broadcast information will be released at a later date.

The Cougars finished the 2021-22 season 24-11 and advanced to the third round of the NIT. BYU coach Mark Pope and his staff have been busy revamping the roster with ten new players, including three returned missionaries and three Division I transfers.

Women’s hoops schedule released by WCC

The West Coast Conference released its 2022-23 women’s basketball conference schedule on Tuesday. The 18-game conference schedule is slated to begin on Saturday, Dec. 19, 2022 and will conclude on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2023.

Defending regular season champion BYU open WCC play with a pair of games in the Pacific Northwest. The Cougars begins conference play on Saturday, Dec. 17, at Gonzaga followed by a trip to Portland on Dec. 19.

BYU opens the home portion of the conference schedule on Dec. 29, when it welcomes Pacific to the Marriott Center. Two days later, they host Saint Mary’s on New Year’s Eve before concluding the three-game homestand on Jan. 7 against San Diego.

The Cougars hit the road for the first time in 2023 with games at Loyola Marymount (Jan. 12) and Pepperdine (Jan. 14) before returning to Provo to host San Francisco (Jan. 19) and Santa Clara (Jan. 21).

Following three-straight road games at Saint Mary’s (Jan. 26), Pacific (Jan. 28) and San Diego (Feb. 4), BYU finishes the regular season with four of its final six games at the Marriott Center.

Pepperdine (Feb. 9) and Loyola Marymount (Feb. 11) make the return trip to Provo before the Cougars hit the road one last time at Santa Clara (Feb. 16) and San Francisco (Feb. 18).

The regular season comes to a close in the final week of February when the Cougars host Portland (Feb. 23) and Gonzaga (Feb. 25). In last season’s home finale, BYU defeated the Zags 63-39 in front of a record 6,289 fans.

The Cougars return only one starter from last year’s 26-4 team in junior forward Lauren Gustin (10.7 points, 11.6 rebounds per game) and have a new coach in Amber Whiting, who replaced retired BYU head man Jeff Judkins.

Blue vs. White women’s soccer kicks off Saturday

BYU women’s soccer will take South Field for the Blue vs. White game on Saturday at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the BYUtv App.

Coming off their record-breaking 2021 season (17-5-2), the Cougars are gearing up for another memorable year. BYU ended its 2021 season ranked No. 2 and claimed the title of the NCAA College Cup runner-up for the first time in program history.

The Cougars lost five seniors from last year’s squad, including All-Americans Mikayla Colohan and Cameron Tucker. BYU welcomes five freshmen to the roster: Avery Frischknecht, Sierra Pennock, Erin Bailey, Emma Neff, Camryn Jorgensen, Allie Fryer, Izzi Stratton and Taygan Sill.

The alumni game will be played Wednesday, Aug. 10 at 7 p.m. on South Field. Both games will be non-ticketed, free events with open seating.

The Cougars open the 2022 season at North Carolina on Aug. 13 and return home to South Field to face Cal State Fullerton on Aug. 18.
