2022 Daily Herald High School Football Previews: Salem Hills young but energetic
Head Coach: Jeff Higginson (3rd season)
2021 record: 1-8 overall, 0-5 Region 9
Playoffs: No. 25 seed (did not participate)
Players to Watch: Treyson Zobell Sr. WR/DB, Jed Hughes Sr. RB, Garrett Holt Sr. LB, Jackson Nelson Sr. QB
Outlook: The Skyhawks rose to great heights in 2020, posting a 9-3 record and getting to the 5A semifinals. The loss of a very talented senior class and the injury bug proved too much to overcome last season and Salem Hills won just one game (against 3A Juab).
“I’m excited with the off-season workouts that our players have gone through,” Skyhawks coach Jeff Higginson said. “I like our team. We’re young but energetic. Our players have bought into the weight room, and have worked hard. We have a very tough preseason schedule, so we will be tested quickly. We’re looking forward to seeing how this team grows.
‘Our region has some good football teams, who are well coached. Springville looks to be tough again, but on Friday nights anyone can win.”
Higginson will rely on the senior leadership of players such as Treyson Zobell, Jed Hughes and Garrett Holt, as well as underclassmen Kort Stewart (WR/DB) and Alex Cloward (TE/DE). Jackson Nelson, who is 6-foot-6, is healthy and provides an athletic option at quarterback.
“Our team has speed this year so it will be interesting to see how that plays,” Higginson said.
Team Captains: “When it comes to team captains, it’s expected that they are total team first guys,” Higginson said. “They should lead not only on the field but in the classroom and in the community. It will be interesting to see how our team elects to those positions.”
