The Timpanogos boys basketball team has discovered some late-season magic.

The Timberwolves broke an eight-game losing streak last Friday with an overtime upset of Region 8’s top team, Alta, and on Tuesday avenged an earlier loss with a 49-42 victory against Lehi.

On Jan. 21, the Pioneers routed the Timberwolves 76-47.

It was a decidedly different story on Tuesday.

“I’ll be honest with you, we’re finally understanding the team concept,” Timpanogos coach Shawn Faux said. “We’re starting to play together. Our effort is just what we’ve been asking for all year long. I’ve told this group that if they play hard and with effort, it doesn’t matter what else happens but if you do, good things will happen.”

In the upset of the Hawks, Bron Roberts fed Mason Faux for the game-winning 3-pointer. On Tuesday, it was Faux’s turn to return the favor.

Faux hit a 3-pointer to give Timpanogos a 39-38 lead with 3:23 to play in the game. Moments later, Faux took a lead pass on the break and tossed the ball off the backboard to the 6-foot-10 Roberts.

“They have a great connection,” Coach Faux said. “What’s exciting about it is they are juniors so they’ll be coming back next year. It’s a design thing they’ve done it before. A lot of people thought it was a shot but that play is designed to come off the backboard for Bron and let him go get it.”

Roberts took the ball and dunked it two-handed for a 41-38 lead with 2:10 to play.

“We have really good chemistry to match the chemistry of the team,” Roberts said. “We always talk about it. We just came out wanting it. We definitely want to peak towards the state championships. It’s building our confidence. There’s so much good energy out there right now and we’ve just been having so much fun.”

After a few tense moments due to turnovers, the Timberwolves put the game away at the free throw line, making 8 of 10 in the final minute.

Roberts finished with 15 points, including nine in the third quarter, and Jaxson Vancheire added 10 for Timpanogos (3-8 Region 8, 7-15 overall).

Cooper Lewis paced Lehi (6-5, 9-10) with 17 points. The Pioneers played most of the game without second-leading scorer Grayson Brousseau, who injured his ankle early in the game.

Lewis heated up in the second quarter, scoring seven straight points for a 14-11 Lehi lead. Timpanogos closed with triples from Jacob Norman, Noah Curtis and Mason Faux, but Braxton Hawkins’ late driving layup gave the Pioneers a 21-20 halftime lead.

Lehi led 26-21 in the third quarter after a basket by Spencer Anderson but Roberts brought the Timberwolves back. A tip-in from Cole Richardson for the Pioneers at the buzzer tied the game at 31 heading into the fourth period.

Timpanogos will close out the regular season on Friday at Jordan and Lehi will host Timpview in its final Region 8 game.

“I’ve told the guys they’ve got to give themselves a chance,” Coach Faux said. “You never know what is going to happen if you just come together and start playing hard. Let’s get some wins going and fix some things. If we do that, we can make a run in the state playoffs.”

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Lehi 57, Timpanogos 39

The Pioneers are doing everything they can to hold on to the No. 1 seed in Class 5A.

On Tuesday, Lehi held Timpanogos to just 11 points in the first half and cruised to an 18-point victory, winning its sixth straight game.

As of Saturday, the Pioneers held a slight edge over Bountiful and Olympus in the RPI and will likely stay there after taking care of the Timberwolves.

Lehi won at home against Timpanogos 47-43 on Jan. 21.

Maci Wall paced the Pioneers (9-2 Region 8, 18-4 overall) with 18 points and Terazina Smith had 10. Summer Christensen led the Timberwolves (5-6, 13-8) with 18 points.

Lehi will close the regular season with a showdown at Timpview on Thursday and Timpanogos travels to Jordan on Friday.

Starting at $4.32/week.
