By Daily Herald - | Jun 28, 2022

UVU players congratulate freshman midfielder Diego Castillo (23) after he scored a penalty kick during the game against Washington at Clyde Field in Orem on Thursday, Sept. 16, 2021.

Utah Valley men’s soccer coach Kyle Beckerman has announced the 2022 schedule, highlighted by six games against NCAA Tournament teams including College Cup runner-up the University of Washington.

The slate also includes last season’s top overall seed in the tournament, Oregon State, who fell just shy of a College Cup berth with a PK loss to Clemson in the round of eight. UC Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, and WAC foes Grand Canyon and Seattle U are the remaining four tournament teams on the schedule.

“This is a really challenging schedule and we know we’ll be tested week in and week out,” the second-year head coach said. “We know our non-conference matches will really prepare us for the stretch run in WAC play. The conference is deep as well so we’re looking forward to getting out there and proving what we’re capable of.”

Following an exhibition on Friday, Aug. 19 against Westminster, the Wolverines will open the season at home on Thursday, Aug. 25 against UC Riverside at 7:30 p.m. MT. The will be the second game of a doubleheader with the women’s team, who will host UCF at 5 p.m. MT. From there, the next five games will all be on the road beginning Aug. 29 at Oregon State. The Beavers finished 14-2-4 and were the Pac 12 champions and finished No. 5 in the final United Soccer Coaches rankings.

The game at Washington will be later that week on Sept. 2. The Huskies were 18-2-2 in 2021 and were ranked No. 2 to end the season after advancing the College Cup championship game where they fell to Clemson, 2-0. The last three non-conference games will be at CSUN (Sept. 8), at Big West champions UC Santa Barbara (Sept. 11), and at West Coast champions Santa Clara (Sept. 16).

The WAC schedule begins at home on Sept. 29 against Houston Baptist in the lone game that week. The Wolverines will also host Incarnate Word (Oct. 13), UT Rio Grande Valley (Oct. 15), Utah Tech (Oct. 28), and California Baptist on Nov. 4 in the regular season finale.

The road slate in conference play takes Utah Valley to regular season champions Grand Canyon (Oct. 7), Air Force (Oct. 9), tournament champion Seattle U (Oct. 21), San José State (Oct. 23), and UNLV (Oct. 30).

California Baptist is the host of the 2022 WAC Tournament, which begins on Wednesday Nov. 9 with the quarterfinal matches. The semifinals will take place on Friday, Nov. 11 and the championship game will be Sunday, Nov. 13.
