Lehi earns No. 1 spot in 5A football playoffs, Skyridge No. 2 in 6A

Lehi players celebrate after getting the final stop during the Region 8 game against Timpview in Lehi on Thursday, Oct. 6, 2022.Over the next five weeks, seven football state championships will be awarded in the state of Utah.
For seven teams, the added bonus of finishing the season undefeated lies in front of them.
In Class 5A, No. 1 seed Lehi and No. 4 seed Stansbury are both 10-0. In 3A, No. 1 Juab and No. 2 Morgan are both 10-0 and appear headed for a state championship clash. The same holds true in 2A, where No. 1 South Summit and No. 2 San Juan are both 10-0. In 1A, No. 2 seed Enterprise is 10-0 and looking to finish the season perfect.
Still, the state playoffs is all about who gets hot and plays its best ball over the course of those five weeks, and that could literally be any team in the bracket.
That’s what makes the state playoffs so special.
On Saturday, the Utah High School Activities Association released the final RPI for each of the seven classifications, which this year also includes an 8-man tournament.
In Class 6A, Corner Canyon (8-2) earned the No. 1 seed while Skyridge, whose only loss is to the Chargers, is 9-1 and the No. 2 seed. American Fork (7-3) is the No. 4 seed, defending state champion Lone Peak (5-4) is No. 11, Pleasant Grove (5-5) is No. 14 and Westlake (2-8) is No. 20.
Unbeaten Lehi, which has six shutouts this season, tops the 5A RPI and looks to defend its 2021 state title. Timpview, which lost to Lehi 28-24 on Oct. 6, is 7-2 and the No. 2 seed. Springville, who’s only loss was the 6A Riverton, is 9-1 and earned the No. 3 seed. Spanish Fork (7-2) is No. 7, Provo (6-3) is No. 8 and Orem (5-4) is No. 11. No. 12 seed Payson (7-3) is hosting its first state playoff game in more than 40 years when it takes on No. 18 Skyline. The other Utah Valley teams in the 5A bracket include No. 13 Cedar Valley (7-3), No. 17 Timpanogos (7-3) and No. 23 Wasatch.
Playoffs begin on Friday, Oct, 21, at home sites.
