In the battle of Region 4 unbeatens, Lone Peak wasn’t messing around.

Both teams came into Tuesday’s match with 5-0 region records but the Knights scored two goals in the first 33 seconds in their showdown with Corner Canyon, eventually earning an impressive 18-7 win on Senior Night.

Sophomore Eliza Agate won consecutive draws to open the match, scoring herself off the first win. Moments later, Maddie Potvin scored the first of her five goals to push the Lone Peak lead to 2-0 before fans had a chance to wrap themselves in blankets on the chilly afternoon.

“We knew that the only way we were going to be able to keep possession in this game was to win the draw right off the bat,” Knights coach Weslie Lundell said. “So Eliza was able to do that. I have all the confidence in the world in her. We’re lucky to have her and that she was able to control the draw. We could feel the way the game was going so we could keep it down on our side and keep possession.”

Catherine Faucette, who led the Chargers with four goals, scored on a breakaway to cut the the Lone Peak lead to 2-1 but the Knights posted the next eight goals, with three from Potvin and two from Sadie Neuenschwander. Potvin had a score after a nice spin move, Corinne Jones had a slick pass to Potvin for another score and Natasha Love fed Camryn McCune for a goal in a very efficient offensive sequence for the Knights, who took a 10-1 lead at the 8:55 mark on a score by Emrie Peterson.

“The game went pretty much the way I was hoping,” Lundell said. “A lot of the girls know each other. Matt (Corner Canyon’s Matt Kenning) and I have coached together. So I think our girls were excited to play them. We told them to have fun on Senior Night since half of them (Corner Canyon) are your friends. Just enjoy being on the field today. I think the girls did a good job doing that.”

Corner Canyon scored three straight goals to close to 10-4, but Agate tallied a goal after a penalty with 1:31 to play to make it an 11-4 lead. As the clock counted down to end the half, Jones raced on the attack and slid a pass to Mickelle Cook for a score with three seconds left and a 12-4 advantage.

Faucette scored to open the second half to cut the deficit to 12-5 but that was a close as the Chargers would get. Potvin and McCune scored after penalties and Agate put a defender in the spin cycle to log another goal, giving Lone Peak a 16-5 lead with 12 minutes to play.

After the match, the Knights honored their 12 seniors, many of whom had been with the program since girls lacrosse became a Utah High School Activities Association-sanctioned sport in 2020.

“They’ve really brought consistency in allowing the program grow as a sanctioned sport,” Lundell said. “Everything was new to us, to the school and to the state. They brought their friends in their freshman year and they loved it enough to stay and continue to grow. We’ve been able to grow our youth program and the girls have done a good job of just growing this game and keeping the sport going.”

One of those seniors is goalie Ellie Fuller, who stymied the Chargers offensive attack with strong play in front of the net. Coming into Tuesday, Fuller was giving up just 6.3 goals per game and had posted 59 saves.

“Gosh, Ellie is incredible,” Lundell said. “I will be really sad to see her go. She’s such a good goalie and such a good teammate. She’s really quiet if you don’t know her that well but everyone loves her. She’s hoping to play at Utah State next year and I’m really excited for her if she decides to do that.”

Agate and Cook finished with three goals apiece for the Knights with Neuenschwander, Peterson and McCune adding two each.

Corner Canyon (5-1 Region 4, 8-2 overall) will host Skyridge on Thursday, while Lone Peak (6-0, 10-1) will be at Pleasant Grove.
