Timpview freshman Delaney Gibb drives to the basket during the Thunderbird loss at Lehi on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2021.

The recruiting momentum created by second-year BYU women’s basketball coach Amber Whiting isn’t slowing down.

On Tuesday, Whiting secured a commitment from Delaney Gibb, a 5-foot-10-inch guard (Raymond, Alberta, Canada) for the Class of 2024. Gibb is a four-star prospect who is ranked as the No. 48 recruit in the Class of 2024 by ESPN. Gibb had also received interest from Utah, Oregon State, Oklahoma State and Gonzaga, among others.

“Honestly, I went on visits basically everywhere and BYU just felt like home to me,” Gibb said Tuesday on the Y’s Guys podcast. “I really love Amber. I think she’s a great coach and super hard working. She pushes every athlete to do the same. I think she’s doing something special (at BYU), changing the program and getting great recruits to come.”

Whiting’s 2023 class includes her daughter, Amari, who is ranked No. 33 and originally committed to Oregon. Three other members of the 2023 class (Utah’s Kailey Woolston, Oregon’s Jenna Isai and Nevada’s Ali’a Matavao) are former Gatorade Players of the Year in their respective states.

I’m a point guard but I can score the ball really well,” Gibb said. “I think that puts me apart from other athletes. I would say I can pretty much do it all and I can shoot the 3 from deep, which allows me to attack because defenders have to come up on me. Then I can create from there.”

Gibb played at Timpview High School in Provo during the 2020-21 season. As a freshman, Gibb averaged nearly 14 points per game and was named first team 5A All-State. At Timpview, she played with her sister, Saige, who is now competing in college basketball at Utah Valley.

Delaney Gibb returned to Raymond and has played for Canada’s junior national teams. On the Y’s Guys podcast, she said her goal is to make the U19 Canadian National Team, which plays in the FIBA World Cup in Spain next month.

“I’ll be playing high school ball in Raymond again (as a senior) and trying to go for Provincial Championship No. 3,” Gibb said. “Then I’ll just be getting ready to be a Cougar.”
