Valley Top 5: Top-ranked teams trying to finish regular season strong

Each week, Daily Herald sports experts Jared Lloyd and Darnell Dickson rank the top five teams in the Utah Valley in baseball, softball, boys soccer, boys lacrosse, girls lacrosse and boys volleyball (records as of April 28):

BASEBALL

1. Maple Mountain (18-2)

Won four games last week, including 2-1 pitcher’s duel with Springville.

2. Timpanogos (18-6)

T-Wolves offense starting to heat up at just the right time.

3. American Fork (12-6)

Cavemen take over No. 1 spot in 6A RPI this week.

4. Springville (13-5)

Red Devils are solid throughout the lineup.

5. Orem (15-4)

Easton Barrett had a day with 8 RBI vs. Cedar Valley.

SOFTBALL

1. Spanish Fork (20-2)

The Dons played one of their best games of the year to roll past Springville.

2. Springville (20-5)

The Red Devils had things fall apart against the Dons but can’t let the sting linger.

3. Salem Hills (17-5)

The Skyhawks still have statements games left against Spanish Fork and Springville.

4. Pleasant Grove (14-6)

The Vikings got the big win over Lehi to stay unbeaten in Region 3.

5. Lehi (13-5-1)

The Pioneers got a chance to see things they need to improve on before the state playoffs.

BOYS SOCCER

1. Lone Peak (9-3)

The Knights were stunned by Pleasant Grove but the lost might bring added focus.

2. Wasatch (12-0)

Will the Wasps make it through the regular season without a loss?

3. American Fork (10-2)

The Cavemen have scored 46 goals in 2024, which shows how dangerous they are on the attack.

4. Salem Hills (11-1)

The upcoming battle between the Skyhawks and Wasatch should be a good one.

5. Pleasant Grove (8-4)

The Vikings upset Lone Peak but couldn’t maintain the momentum.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

1. Orem (21-3)

Tigers will likely be No. 1 seed in 4A state tournament.

2. Westlake (14-3)

Thunder sitting pretty at No. 2 in 6A RPI this week.

3. Maple Mountain (16-2)

Junior Trey Thornton is hitting bombs (4.5 kills per set, .370).

4. Pleasant Grove (18-5)

Vikings won fourth set 34-32 to knock off Lone Peak.

5. Lone Peak (19-5)

Knights have turbo-charged offense with four players logging at least 140 kills.

GIRLS LACROSSE

1. Payson (11-1)

Lions routed past two opponents by a combined score of 45-3.

2. Lone Peak (8-4)

Knights making late charge, knocked off PG for fifth straight victory.

3. Pleasant Grove (10-3)

Senior Eliza Berg with 47 points (34 goals, 13 assists) for Vikings.

4. Skyridge (9-4)

Falcons coming off dominating wins vs. AF and Lehi.

5. Timpanogos (10-2)

T-Wolves get another crack at Payson, this time in Orem.

BOYS LACROSSE

1. Orem (8-3)

The Tigers couldn’t get past the Lions but remain the only team in Utah Valley with fewer than three losses.

2. American Fork (9-4)

The Cavemen have a big showdown with Lone Peak coming up.

3. Payson (8-4)

The Lion defense did its job as Payson knocked off Orem.

4. Spanish Fork (7-4)

How will the Dons respond after dropping their first Region 7 game.

5.  Skyridge (8-4)

The Falcons could move up but could also be caught by other teams who aren’t far behind.
