BYU point guard Robert Wright III entered the transfer portal last week and visited Kentucky on Tuesday.
But it appears the grass isn’t always greener in college basketball and he’s still a Cougar.
Both 24/7 Sports and On3 reported on Wednesday that Wright has decided to return to Provo and BYU released a statement that same afternoon verifying that fact.
“Rob is the best point guard in college basketball,” BYU head men’s basketball coach Kevin Young said. “He is poised to lead our team as the floor general and help be an extension of our staff. I’m looking forward to continuing to coach Rob and help him develop his game.”

The sophomore apparently wanted to test the college free agent waters to see what was available but ultimately his experience in in Young’s system led him back.
Wednesday also brought reports that former Timpview standout Jake Wahlin, a 6-foot-10 power forward, has committed to play for the Cougars.
Wright, who played his freshman season at Baylor, was a dynamic scorer for BYU in 2025-26, averaging 18.1 points, 3.5 rebounds and 4.6 assists in 35 games. Along with freshman AJ Dybantsa (25.5 points per game) and senior Richie Saunders (18.0), Wright helped form one of the most efficient offensive trios in the country.
Wright hit a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer to beat Clemson at Madison Square Garden in December and scored a career-high 39 points in an overtime win at Colorado in February.
Wahlin has traveled a long and winding road in college basketball since signing with Mark Pope and BYU way back in 2020. After returning from his church mission to Lithuania, Wahlin opted to play for the University of Utah. He averaged 6.3 points and 4.9 rebounds as a sophomore in 2023-24, then transferred to Clemson last season. There he posted 5.3 points and 3.9 rebounds per game — he had one point and four rebounds when the Tigers and Cougars met at MSG on Dec. 9 — before entering the portal last week.
With Wright’s apparent return and the commitment from Wahlin, Cougar head coach Kevin Young and his coaching staff are still looking to fill at least four roster spots.
Wright will form a strong nucleus with Kentucky transfer guard Collin Chandler and highly rated freshman forward Bruce Branch III, while Wahlin will be an experience support piece of the puzzle.
BYU is still on the lookout for more size through the transfer portal with current interest in 7-1 Eric Reibe of UConn, 6-11 Sebastian Rancik of Colorado and 6-9 Keanu Dawes of Utah, among others.
On Tuesday, the Cougars got a commitment from 6-7 sharpshooter Tyler Betsey from Syracuse.
