BYU football’s fall practice session is set to get underway during the first week of August and with it will come a lot of reporting on the preparations for the coming 2026 football season. Several players will receive focus throughout the month of August with more than several of them likely to prove pivotal for the Cougar’s overall success this season.

In the lead-up to the fall football practice session we’ll be previewing 15 such players whose contribution and progress throughout August will very likely play big in determining how successful of a team BYU proves to be in 2026.

Evan Johnson has received a lot of preseason hype, and justifiably so after establishing himself as BYU’s top cornerback from last season. Big things are expected from Johnson with the expectation that he’ll lock down one side of the field while being in the discussion of one of the best cornerbacks to ever pass through the Cougar football program.

But what about the other side of the field?

Opposite Johnson stands Alexander, who also made big strides last season with continued improvements making him one of the more pivotal players on BYU’s defense.

Alexander presents good size and is someone who plays with a lot of emotion. He’s also proved very serviceable in establishing himself as the starter opposite Johnson last season, earning the nod over some more seasoned players.

Alexander arrived in Provo prior to 2024 and saw spot duty as a two-deep contributor as a freshman. Last season he played in all 14 games played, starting in 12 of those games while tallying 34 total tackles and an impressive six pass breakups.

Should Alexander prove himself as a true shutdown cornerback, much in the form of Johnson, then it will free up what BYU’s defense can employ considerably. It could lead to more blitz packages and a type of aggressive scheme which fans love and opposing offenses in turn hate.
