Surging Springville: Red Devils take a thrilling 2-1 win over rival Maple Mountain

Replacing 12 seniors isn’t easy by any means, although Springville seems to have done so quite admirably with Tuesday’s thrilling 2-1 win over Region 7-leading Maple Mountain providing the latest piece of evidence.
Haley Murdock scored what proved to the be game-winner with just over four minutes remaining to give the Red Devils a well-earned victory which featured competitive play with both teams missing out on several goal-scoring opportunities. Although both teams had several chances, one could easily argue it was Springville which forged the better opportunities throughout working in stark contrast to the 4-o route the Golden Eagles forged when the teams last met up back on August 27.
“That loss was a tough one. It was really rough, so getting this win tonight over Maple feels so good,” said Springville senior Trevi Jackson, who scored the game’s first goal midway through the second half. “It feels amazing to get this one.”
Amazing particularly for Jackson, who had a prime goal-scoring opportunity go by the wayside midway through the first half of play before making up for it with a goal scored midway through the second half.
“That was one was really rough because I usually score those with no problem, so I was really mad about it,” Jackson said of her missed opportunity in the first half. “So getting it back felt so good, and getting this win feels so good against a great team like Maple Mountain.”
Jackson’s second half goal proved to be a big boost and was sort of predicted by Springville coach Todd Hollingshead at the half.
“At halftime we talked about it, and we all looked at her and said, ‘Trevi, you will score the next one,'” Hollingshead related. “We all believe in her, and she believes in herself, and we knew it was going to happen. So that was really big for us. We know we’re a good team, and we match the quality of the other teams it’s just nice to see us put a few goals in the back of the net to get the win.”
Taking quality wins has been tough for the Red Devils so far this season, although they’ve proved competitive during most matches. Tough shootout losses to Spanish Fork and then to Timpview on top of taking overtime losses to both Pleasant Grove and Salem Hills have all worked in somewhat proving that Springville is definitely better than its current 6-7 overall record on the season would indicate.
“It’s not always wins and losses and soccer’s a brutal sport,” Hollingshead said. “Over time, it could go either direction, and we’ve had our fair share of things that didn’t bounce our way. So we just have talked to the girls about staying positive and knowing that they’re a talented team that can play at a high level. So they’ve stayed positive and continued to work, so beating a great team like Maple Mountain allows them to see the fruits of all of it, and I couldn’t be happier for them and what they did tonight.”
While offense typically takes center stage in most wins, Hollingshead reserved particular praise for his defensive players, and particularly goalkeeper Lacy Conrad, whom was named as the MVP for Tuesday’s win.
“She’s been so good for us all year and she definitely earned it with the play she had tonight,” Hollingshead said.
As mentioned, Springville has had to made do this season with a relatively young team that had to replace more than several notable senior leaders from a season ago. While it’s all been a work in progress, the goal is always to peak at the right time, which the Red Devils appear to be doing with the state playoffs right around the corner.
“You want to learn and grow into the season, and then hopefully we can keep it going and, and really take that momentum into the playoffs,” Hollingshead said. “It’s hard when you’re taking early losses, and it’s hard when we make mistakes that we don’t want to make, but you try to learn from that, and if you can, then you can start seeing some positive results.”
Positive results like the one put forth on Tuesday against a Maple Mountain team that went into the game having won seven straight, causing the postgame celebration by Springville players and students a bit more enthusiastic.
“We’re really close to that school and the players all know each other really well,” Jackson concluded. “So this was a big one for us because it’s always more intense when you know a team as well as we know them. It’s also big for our momentum and our growth as a team. Hopefully this will give us momentum and push us to be even better with our next few games before the state tournament.”
