BYU senior wide receiver Kody Epps (0) and other players run onto the field before the game against Southern Illinois at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2024.Here is Jared Lloyd’s look at the BYU-Kansas State matchups, including his prediction for the final score for Saturday’s game at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo:
BYU offense vs. KSU defense
The chess match on this side of the ball will be intriguing since the Wildcats are excellent at stopping the run and the Cougars are likely going to be relying on a committee approach to the ground game. BYU will need Jake Retzlaff to make some good passes to open up some holes but he’s capable of getting things rolling through the air. It just won’t be easy.
Edge: KSU
BYU defense vs. KSU offense
The Cougars face a very good Wildcat ground attack with Kansas State quarterback Avery Johnson adding an extra element. BYU has been solid against the pass, which means there may be opportunities to commit more resources to stuffing the Wildcat run game and daring them to throw more.
Edge: BYU
Coaching
BYU head coach Kalani Sitake has come up with some solid early-season upsets in his career and this is an opportunity to add another one. Kansas State head coach Chris Klieman has turned the Wildcats into perennial contenders but would love to take another step forward this season.
Edge: Even
Intangibles
BYU will be playing at home in front of what should be a raucous crowd at LaVell Edwards Stadium. Although the weather shouldn’t be a factor, the Wildcats face the challenge of a late start and playing at altitude in a venue they’ve never played in before. It’s a veteran KSU squad, which will help, but it’s still going to be tough.
Edge: BYU
Key Matchup: BYU defensive line vs. KSU quarterback Avery Johnson
A quarterback like Johnson who has tremendous athleticism is always looking for an opening, so it will be up to the Cougar linemen to squeeze the pocket without giving him creases to escape through. If BYU can keep Johnson and the rest of the Wildcat ball carriers from getting big chunks of yardage, that will provide opportunities to force turnovers and get off the field. But Johnson is really, really good, so that is easier said than done.
Edge: KSU
Prediction
Both teams have a chance to make a big statement to start conference play and this will be an exciting showcase for the Big 12. BYU will go in front, then fall behind, then rally as the home fans provide a big boost. A late Cougar drive in the fourth quarter will chew up some important clock and although BYU won’t quite be able to put the game away, the Cougar defense will prevent a last-second KSU score to give the home team the upset.
BYU 30, Kansas State 26
