BYU men’s basketball fans got a good look at Baylor freshman guard Robert Wright III back on Jan 28 in the Marriott Center.
Wright scored 22 points and dished out six assists as the Bears pushed the home team to overtime before losing 93-89.
Head coach Kevin Young obviously thought Wright would look good in Cougar blue.
On Monday, BYU put rumors to paper and officially announced Wright’s signing for the 2025-26 season.
“We are excited to welcome Rob and his entire family to BYU,” Young said. “He comes from a great family, and we are thrilled to have them all join Cougar Nation. Rob is one of the most dynamic guards in the country with his combination of speed and quickness. He is the ultimate floor general and makes everyone around him better. We look forward to getting Rob on campus and getting to work.”

The 6-foot-1 guard earned Honorable Mention All-Big 12 and All-Freshman Team accolades in 2024-25 at Baylor after averaging 11.5 points, 4.2 assists and 1.0 steals per game. He shot 41.4 percent from the field, 35.2 percent from three and 79.6 percent from the charity stripe as one of only two Bears to play in all 35 games.
He scored in double figures 22 times including a trio of games with 20-plus including a career-high 24 in a win over No. 11 Kansas where the Bears overcame a 19-point halftime deficit.
The native of Wilmington, Delaware’s 148 assists were the fifth-most by any freshmen in NCAA Division I men’s basketball last season. He recorded five or more assists 10 times including a career-high 13 in a 94-49 win over Norfolk State.
The advent of the transfer portal and NIL has created college basketball free agency every spring so Young and his coaching staff are busy putting together a roster for next season. The momentum of a Sweet 16 appearance has already brought Wright and reportedly former Washington Husky Dominique Diomande into the fold. Point guard Dallin Hall is now a former Cougar, having signed a deal with the University of Virginia. Over the weekend, reports had Kanon Catchings committing to the University of Georgia.
Wright seems like the perfect addition to the team, someone who will complement the talents of incoming freshman A.J. Dybantsa (who is coming to Provo at the end of April) as well as returning (hopefully) leading scorer Richie Saunders.
Ranked as the No. 24 recruit in the 2024 ESPN Top 100, Wright played his senior season at Montverde Academy on arguably one of the most talented teams in history with Cooper Flagg, Liam McNeeley, Asa Newell and Derik Queen. He helped them to a 33-0 record and a Chipotle Nationals title going 4-of-4 from the field with nine points in a 79-63 over Paul VI in the championship game.
He was named the Pennsylvania Gatorade Player of the Year as a junior after averaging 23.1 points, 4.9 assists and 4.6 rebounds per game for Neumann-Goretti High School. He was named the 2022 Class 4A Player of the Year as a sophomore where he averaged 22.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.4 steals per game leading his team to a state title.
