BYU’s Gibb helps lead Canada into FIBA final

BYU guard Delaney Gibb scored 17 points as Canada beat New Zealand 86-71 in the semifinals of the FIBA Women’s Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico on Saturday.
In just over 19 minutes Gibb converted 7 of 13 field goals, including a pair of 3-pointers, and added three assists and two steals.
Canada built a substantial 57-31 advantage by halftime, controlled the tempo throughout the second half, and now stand just one win away from a historic FIBA Women’s Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament title. For New Zealand, the loss ends their title hopes, and they must regroup for the bronze-medal game.
With 1:09 left in the opening quarter, Ella Tofaeono tied the game at 16-16 with a layup for New Zealand. But Tara Wallack responded just 18 seconds later, knocking down a three-pointer at the 0:51 mark to restore Canada’s lead at 19-16.
Gibb scored nine points in the second quarter as Canada put up 34 points against New Zealand to grab the big lead.
Canada’s biggest run came early in the final quarter, when they unleashed an 8-0 surge to stretch the lead from 70-52 to 78-52. Kayla Alexander and Jasmine Bascoe each scored four points during this stretch, both going 2-of-2 from the field and grabbing a rebound apiece.
Canada’s largest lead reached 30 points at 61-31 with 8:16 remaining in the third quarter.
Syla Swords scored 17 points for Canada, including 5 of 5 from the 3-point line and Bascoe contributed 15 points and eight assists.
Lauren Whitaker led New Zealand with 21 points.
Canada takes on host Mexico in Sunday’s final. The two teams met during pool play with Canada earning a 70-64 win. Mexico beat Brazil 83-64 in other semifinal.
