BYU Roundup: Texas Tech wins Big 12 baseball series with Cougars

LUBBOCK, Texas — BYU lost to Texas Tech 15-11 on Saturday afternoon at Rip Griffin Park in a wild game that lasted nearly four hours and featured a combined 26 runs on 29 hits, including seven home runs. The Red Raiders won two of the three games in Lubbock.

Texas Tech (26-25, 9-18) scored its 15 runs on 17 hits, while BYU (25-25, 13-14) had 11 runs on 12 hits.

Ezra McNaughton and Crew McChesney led BYU by both going 3 for 4 with three RBI, including a home run. Ryder Robinson and Parker Goff also hit homers as part of BYU’s 12-hit attack.

BYU took a 4-3 lead in the top of the third on Robinson’s three-run home run that scored Luke Anderson and McNaughton, who both singled to lead off the inning.

TTU retook the lead in the bottom half of the inning on a single and home run for a 5-4 advantage. The Cougars responded with three more in the top of the fourth to regain the lead at 7-5. After Goff reached base on a fielder’s choice and Anderson walked, McNaughton hit his 14th home run of the season, giving him 48 RBIs on the year.

Texas Tech responded with six runs in the fourth inning on five hits and picked another run in the fifth for a 12-7 advantage. BYU fought back in the sixth to make it a two-run game with the Cougars’ third three-run home run of the day, this one by Crew McChesney with Robinson and Jones aboard to pull within 12-10.

After holding the Red Raiders scoreless in the sixth, Goff homered to lead off the seventh inning to cut the lead to one at 12-11.

Two TTU runs on a triple with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, combined with a solo home run in the eighth gave the Red Raiders the 15-11 win.

Having wrapped up its 30-game road schedule with a 16-14 record, BYU heads home for the final four games of the 2026 regular season, before heading to Surprise, Arizona, for the 2026 Big 12 Baseball Championship, May 19-23.

The Cougars will take on UVU on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Miller Park, before welcoming Big 12 foe Kansas to Provo for a three-game series on Thursday and Friday. All four games will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and on the BYU Radio app, BYUradio.org, SiriusXM 143 and 107.9 FM in Utah County.

Men’s lacrosse prevails over Virginia Tech for national title

RICHMOND, Va. — BYU (20-1) put on a great show in the title game of the MCLA National Championships to defeat Virginia Tech 16-13 to win their sixth national championship.

The Cougars got dominant individual performances from Gavin Taylor with eight goals, Mason Quick, with three goals and two assists, Hutton Murphy with four goals and three assists, and Easton Wilkey with 22 saves.

“We planned for this day from our first practice all the way back in September,” BYU head coach Matt Schenck told USA Lacrosse Magazine.

The sixth title brings the Cougars into a tie with Colorado State for the most MCLA Division I National Championships.
