Head Coach: Bart Brockbank (6th season)

2021 record: 10-2 overall, 4-1 Region 4

Playoffs: No. 2 seed, defeated No. 1 Corner Canyon 49-42 to win 6A title

Players to Watch: Crew McChesney 5-11 180 Sr. WR/DB, Cole Christensen 5-9 165 Sr. WR, Cooper Mumfort 6-4 275 Sr. OL, Spencer Bradshaw 6-4 285 Sr. OL, Nathan Darrington 6-1 265 Sr. DL

Outlook: The 2021 season was certainly one to remember for Lone Peak as the Knights beat mighty Corner Canyon twice and ended up winning the 6A state title.

But Lone Peak head coach Bart Brockbank knows looking backward can bring about disastrous results.

“it’s great to have what we’ve had,” Brockbank said. “The tradition is a big deal — but you can’t rely on last year to repeat itself. You’ve got to earn it. We’ve spent a lot of time talking about that, and the team’s mantra this year’s is burn the ships like the Spanish explorer Cortez. He burned his ships so there was no going back. You’ve got to start anew and forge our own path.”

The Knights lost a large number of contributors from last year’s squad but this is a program that tends to reload, so don’t expect Lone Peak to drop much.

“We have to replace 10 of our 11 starters on defense although we had players who got plenty of time on the field,” Brockbank said. “It’s going to be about them gelling. But for the most part I’m pretty excited about this year. I think we have a lot of talent but it’s about learning to play together as a team.”

He said that the most important thing for the 2022 squad to be its best is to have guys come to grips with what the team needs from them.

“With all the great individual talent that we have, they are going to have to learn how to play together and handling what they are called on to do,” Brockbank said. “We need guys that do their job on every play, even if they don’t always get the recognition. Everyone needs to be about winning as a team.”

Team Captains: “The team votes for captains at our team camp,” Brockbank said. “We usually select four to six captains, depending on if there are ties. First and foremost, the expectation of the captains is for them to lead by example. We expect our captains to be grinding at all times, showing the team. It’s not a lead by yelling but it’s a lead by example. We don’t really tell them how much to be vocal or not vocal but to be what we call involved with the team. That means that they understand and know what’s going on with their teammates.”
