After the first day of the 5A boys state wrestling tournament, Uintah, who won the 4A classification last season, is just ahead of Payson, the returning 5A champion.

Uintah (144.5) finds itself 9.5 points in front of Payson (135) as the meet heads into the semifinals and blood round (where wrestlers in consolation will battle from eight to the six place winners).

Uintah has 11 wrestlers on the top side of the bracket still seeking gold while Payson has eight. There will be three head-to-head match-ups between the rivals at 126, 144 and 190 pounds.

The bout of the day was definitely the epic match-up between Uintah’s Dillon Dick and Payson’s Trevor Frank at 150 pounds. Because Dick was upset twice at the divisional tournaments, the two grapplers met in the quarterfinals and Dick secured a takedown in the last few seconds to win 6-5.

There was also another huge upset at 150 pounds when Spanish Fork’s Alex Koyle defeated Northridge’s Ben Brown 3-2. Brown was a 6A runner-up last year but Koyle got his hand raised. Koyle also pinned Mountain View’s Xavier Perez in the first round of the tournament in a mild upset. Koyle was one of four Don wrestlers to make the semifinals.

Lehi will have two teammates meet in the semifinals at 285-pounds as Isaac Terrell will meet Nathan Bulpitt who posted two upsets of his own defeating Maple Mountain’s Joshua Jackson and Brighton’s Manu Nonu in successive matches.

Wasatch finds itself in distant third but a strong third with seven finalists, as 30 points separate the Wasps from Payson but Wasatch is 52.5 points ahead of fourth place Viewmont. A good battle brews between Viewmont, Lehi, Box Elder, Mountain View, Spanish Fork and Maple Mountain for that fourth position with all six teams with realistic shots at it.

5A Girls Notes

Maple Mountain (81.5) came out strong and put eight wrestlers into the semifinals to take an 8.5 point lead over Uintah (73). Northridge sits 15.5 points back in third.

At the Divisional A tournament, the Golden Eagles actually finished third behind those two schools. Springville (6 1) and Tooele (58) round out the top five.

At 190 pounds, two Maple Mountain wrestlers are on a collision course to meet in the finals as Nya Seiuli and Aurelia Ramos both won their matches Wednesday. Timpview’s Kaianne Sabagala improved her record to 25-0 at 130 pounds.

3A Boys Notes

American Leadership Academy (ALA) is in sixth place with 50 points after the first day of the 3A tournament held at the Sevier Event Center in Richfield. Juab (140) is winning the tournament and Morgan (101.5) is in second.

Andrew Fox (113), Kendal Rasmussen (120), Traeton Rasmussen and Lukus Carrillo (138) won their first two matches for ALA to reach the semifinals.

1A-3A Girls Notes

ALA finds itself in fifth place with 52 points after day one of the 1A-3A girls state tournament hosted by the Sevier Event Center in Richfield. Juab holds a slim two point edge over Grantsville, 64-62. Rich (56) and Enterprise (55) are third and fourth respectively.

Jaskin Hair (105), Rachel Camacho (110), Olivia Carrillo (140), Jayden Morley, Natalia Burton (170) and Jocelyn Helper (190) are in the semifinals for ALA.

If Juab and Maple Mountain in 5A can hold on to their leads, you will have the first father-daughter duo in Billy Cox (Juab)and Hailey Corona (Maple Mountain) to lead their teams to the state titles.
