Wrestling update: Pleasant Grove finishes third at Rockwell Rumble

Pleasant Grove was the highest finishing local team at the Rockwell Rumble as the Vikings finished in third place with 184.5 points.

Uintah won the tournament scoring 224 and — thanks to Will Harmon’s win at 175-pounds — Juab (185.5) nudged past the Vikings by one point for the runner-up position.

This tournament brought together some of the best teams in Utah, along with some tough out-of-state programs, making it the toughest tournament once again in Utah this prep wrestling season.

The only other area team in the Top 10 was Wasatch, which finished tied for 10th with Corner Canyon with 97 points.

Other local teams in the Rockwell Rumble were Westlake (96.5) in 12th place, Lehi (80) in 18th place, American Fork (79) in 19th place, Payson and Salem Hills tied for 24th place with 71.5 points, Mountain View (71) in 27th place, Spanish Fork (62.5) in 29th place, Skyridge (35) in 45th place, Lone Peak (34) in 48th place, Maple Mountain (33) in 49th place, Springville (29) in 54th place, and tied for 67th place was Cedar Valley with six points. A total of 68 teams competed in this year’s Rockwell Rumble.

Koda DeAtley (138 pounds) and Kort Wilkinson (285) led the Viking charge with runner-up finishes.

Two local wrestlers were able to climb to the top of the podium in this very prestigious event.

American Fork’s Dallan Hunsaker won the 126-pound title by defeating Morgan’s Will Korth, 6-5.

Once again, the UHSAA allowed a special exemption for a 98-pound weight class, which was won by Westlake’s Korbin Chuchran as he defeated Salem Hills’ Breyton Banks by a 8-0 major decision.

Lone Peak’s Cayaen Smith (165), Payson’s Landen Shurtleff (175), and Lehi’s Will McCleary (190) just missed out on gold medals as each finished in second place in their respective weight classes.

At the North Sevier Invitational, Orem’s Hudson Doussett (190) nailed down an individual title as Orem placed 11th in the 20-team field. Canyon View took home the gold trophy.

Westlake sent a group of wrestlers to the Redhawks Rumble hosted by Bountiful. The Thunder won the team title in the 17-team field.

Jamyne Xoumphonphackdy (106), Parker Ballantyne (113), Cameron Baum (138) and Maison Weeks (157) all won titles, while Hunter Ball (126) and Jace Brower (150) placed second for the Thunder.

At the Milford Invitational on Friday, Tintic placed fifth out of 13 teams as Jaden Kriegh (215) won an individual title. Returning 1A state champions Panguitch won the tourney.

Then on Saturday Tintic hosted the Battle of the Mine and the host team took third place as Providence Hall won the tournament and Lincoln County out of Nevada was second. American Leadership Academy (ALA) sent two wrestlers and finished sixth while Maeser Prep placed eighth and Telos Academy tenth in the 10-team field. Gordon Grimstead (106) and Kriegh (215) won titles for Tintic.

In dual meet action Westlake defeated Lone Peak 42-33, Spanish Fork slipped by rival Springville 42-38, Millard pinned Payson 43-21, Wasatch whipped 48-30, Pleasant Grove pummeled Skyridge 60-20 and ALA 71-3, Corner Canyon crushed American Fork 52-25, and Lehi lapped Lone Peak 45-27.

Girls wrestling

Westlake won the Girls Rockwell Rumble with 213 points while Mountain Crest was second with 198 points. SLAM Academy out of Las Vegas was third with 183 points.

Other Utah County programs in the 33-team field were Springville (103) in sixth place, Mountain View (71) in ninth place, Pleasant Grove (56.5) in 14th place, Cedar Valley (23) in 20th place, Maple Mountain (9.5) in 25th place, while American Fork, Lehi and Skyridge tied for 28th place with four points. in 25th place. A total of 32 teams competed in the girls Rumble.

Celeste Detoles (125), Lizzie Shunn (140), and Keilikki Rarick (235) all won titles for the Thunder while Ashley Cannon (115) and Hailey Piig (145) placed second.

Shunn defeated Mountain View’s Esther Han 8-5 in a battle of nationally ranked grapplers.

One other local champion was Pleasant Grove’s Brooklyn Hays (155), who pinned Hotaia Valeti of Springville in her championship final.

In dual meet action last week, Corner Canyon defeated American Fork 30-30, winner by criteria, Westlake cruised past Copper Hills 54-24, Springville blanked Spanish Fork 18-0, and Pleasant Grove pushed past ALA 24-12.
