Prep football rewind: Big comebacks highlight Week 2
Dan Davies/Special to the Herald
Orem's Roger Saleapaga (2) leaps over American Fork defender Osagyefo Agor during a high school football game on Friday, August 18, 2023.Week two of the prep football season brought some bounce back victories, some epic finishes and some sterling individual performances in Utah Valley.
Here’s a look back at some of the most interesting stories and results:
Five and Five: For the second straight week, Springville’s Tevita Valeti scored five touchdowns in a 36-8 win against Bonneville. He also rushed for 175 yards to go with 180 yards the week previous for a total of 385 to lead the state. He also has the lead in touchdowns, one ahead of Zack Conway of San Juan.
But besides the rushing exploits of Valeti, Springville’s defense has been stellar. In reality the defense has allowed just eight points because one of the touchdowns the Red Devils gave up came via a kickoff return. All total, Springville has outscored its opponents 70-15.
Noland Parry nailed it (sort of): Every week for the Deseret News, Noland Parry gives out his ratings of the match-ups for the week. The Provo versus Olympus game had the two teams separated by just .1 in his rating system with Olympus having the slightest edge. But in the end it was Provo that came away with a 21-20 victory overcoming a 13-0 deficit.
Trailing 20-14 in the fourth quarter, Provo used some trickeration as running back Drew Duecher took a pitch from quarterback Soakai Ashton and then hurled the ball to receiver Bryant Larsen for a 66-yard touchdown with just 2:03 left in the final stanza. Provo’s defense stood up to one last Titan charge and blocked a 52-yard field goal attempt to seize the win on enemy turf. The Bulldogs have allowed just 20 points in its two games and one touchdown was a fumble recovery by the Olympus defense.
Impressive bounce-back victories: ALA, Cedar Valley, Payson, Salem Hills and Timpview all lost their opening week games but all bounced back with impressive wins in week two.
ALA put up 50 points in its victory over 1A Parowan holding the Rams to just 22. Kannon Huntsman had another big game for the Eagles scoring with four touchdown runs. Two of them were from 60 yards along with scoring runs of 50 and 5 yards. He added a two-point conversion for good measure. Thomas O’Donnell scored on a 50-yard interception return to add to the Eagle scoring barrage.
Cedar Valley became the second team to put up 60 points plus on Jordan as the Aviators flew past the Beetdiggers, 62-41. After trailing 14-0 early, Cedar Valley rattled off 35 straight points. Chevas Gregory had four touchdown runs for the Aviators, while Gavin Killian added another two on the ground.
Payson crushed Hillcrest 57-19 building up a 47-6 lead at halftime. Quarterback Kade Edwards was beyond impressive, tossing six touchdown passes while running for another. Dylan Wall was the recipient of three of those. Payson’s defense shined just giving up two scores as the third touchdown for Hillcrest came via a kickoff return late in the game.
Salem Hills slapped around hapless Cottonwood, 50-0. It was the second week in a row the Colts failed to scratch a point. Roper Kay had two long touchdown runs of 69 and 60 yards and his Skyhawk teammate Tate Allred also had two touchdowns on the ground. Quarterback Jedi Nelson tossed two touchdown passes to Alex Cloward as Salem Hills rolled.
For the second week in a row Timpview took to the road to test itself against 6A Region 3. Luke Thornock’s 31-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter broke a 28-28 deadlock to give the Thunderbirds the win against Lone Peak. Helaman Casuga had three touchdown passes for T-Birds while Brooks Wilde scored twice for the Knights.
Storming the Field: After Fernando Banuelos kicked a 38-yard field goal with just one second to play to give Maple Mountain a 27-24 lead over city rival Spanish Fork, one could see a swelling of Maple Mountain students gathering by the fence on the track. The public address announcer made numerous announcements for students not to go on to the field, but of course they were ignored after Spanish Fork failed to score on the ensuing kickoff.
Banuelos has been a hero for Maple Mountain. Last week against Payson he hit two field goals with the last one giving the Golden Eagles a lead they would never relinquish. Then he hit two field goals against Spanish Fork, the last one into a stiff wind to give Maple Mountain a stirring win over its rival. Quarterback Banks Jackson scored twice for Maple Mountain including a 74-yard run, and the Golden Eagle defense and special teams forced four Don turnovers.
Kaden Vest had another impressive game for Spanish Fork running the ball and has 262 yards rushing in two games. He also had a touchdown in the losing cause.
Region 3 Dominance: Region 3 is already showing its dominance as its teams are 10-2 after two weeks of play. American Fork, Lehi, Pleasant Grove, and Skyridge are all undefeated. The only two losses the league has faced were a 31-28 setback for Lone Peak against Timpview and Westlake’s 34-6 loss to Alta. It is interesting that two of Region 3’s losses have come to 5A foes.
American Fork came back to defeat Orem 24-20 as Dylan Story’s 3-yard pass to Josh Andrus gave the Cavemen a 23-20 lead. Payton Roth split the uprights to force Orem to score a touchdown that it couldn’t provide. Roth also added a 15-yard field goal earlier in the game. Meanwhile, Lance Reynolds III tossed two touchdown passes for Orem.
Lehi beat the defending 4A state champs Desert Hills 31-14 at home. Pioneer signal caller Jett Niu tossed four touchdown passes to four different receivers while Gavin Fenn hit a 47-yard field goal.
Pleasant Grove secured its second straight victory over a Region 1 team as it beat Weber 40-14. The Vikings have allowed just 14 points on the season. Quarterback Carson Rasmussen tossed four touchdown passes while Kael McCoy ran for one score and caught another as Pleasant Grove’s offense really clicked.
The defending 6A champions Skyridge roughed up 5A East, 48-23. Carter Sheffield had three touchdown runs to pace the Falcon attack.
Defensive scores highlight Park City game against Timpanogos: The last two touchdowns in the Park City vs. Timpanogos’ game came via the defense. Park City had a pick six, while Timpanogos’ Brigham Tate had a fumble recovery that pulled the Timberwolves to within two points. However, Park City hung on to win 35-33 to go to 2-0. Luke Livingston had three touchdown passes for Timpanogos.
Big Game of the Week, No. 1: Madonna and Michael Bolton were dominating the pop music charts in the late 1980’s when Provo (2-0) last beat Timpview (1-1). But the two longtime Provo city rivals have taken a bit of a break from playing each other the past two seasons as the two were put in separate regions. This year the two schools are actually in two different classifications but will have a non-league contest. Provo fans will hope that this is the year, while Timpview wants to derail these dreams. Timpview continues to play without a home field as the construction on its campus continues.
Big Game of the Week, No. 2: Cedar Valley (1-1) and Westlake (1-1) are in different classifications but many Cedar Valley students once attended Westlake. The programs are two of the newer schools in northern Utah County which has seen a population explosion. This one is hard to predict. After an impressive victory for Westlake in week one, the Thunder offense was lackluster in its game against Alta. Meanwhile, Cedar Valley lost its opener against 4A Bear River but bounced back big time against Jordan.
Big Game of the Week, No. 3: For Lone Peak (1-1), it’s like going from the frying pan into the fire as the Knights travel to Draper to take on former Region 4 rival Corner Canyon (1-1). Lone Peak lost a close one to Timpview in week two, while Corner Canyon hosted and lost 63-42 to Bishop Gorman, the number two ranked program in the nation out of Las Vegas. The Chargers will be the favorite but a good performance by Lone Peak might give the Knights confidence for the rest of their season. And no in-state team has played Corner Canyon better in recent years.
Extra Points: Only two valley teams remain without a win as Mountain View and Spanish Fork are 0-2. Wasatch, who competes in Region 7 with many county teams, is also 0-2…A famous Dirty Harry quote is “a man has to know his limitations.” That was never more apparent when Taylorsville traveled to Colorado to take on Centennial state powerhouse Chatfield. 5A Taylorsville lost to 2A Summit Academy 24-21 in week one and the Warriors found themselves down 49-0 at halftime in this contest. Sometimes better screening of the schedule is needed by either by the lead administrator and/or athletic director which leads to another famous quote often used by former BYU/Raider legend and broadcast analyst Todd Christensen; “discretion is a better part of valor”…Speaking of South Summit, the charter school pulled off another big win against a much larger school when the Bears beat Skyline, 24-8. Most experts expect San Juan to completely dominate 2A but Summit Academy might have different ideas…Lehi extended its winning streak to 21 games. San Juan has the longest winning streak in the state at 27 games. On the other end of things, 5A Clearfield has lost 22 straight as its last win was against 4A Bear River in the second game of the 2021 season…Taking out the games where Utah County teams played each other, valley teams were an impressive 9-3 this past week and are now 18-5 on the season.
