This is the week just about everyone in high school wrestling has been waiting for.

The boys and the girls 3A through 6A state tournaments are spread throughout the week with the 4A and 5A boys tourney starting today at the and finishing on Wednesday.

The 6A boys tournament, along with 3A boys, will start Wednesday and finish up Thursday, while the 3A through 6A girls tournaments will be Friday and Saturday.

The UCCU Event Center on the campus of Utah Valley University will host these events.

Here’s a look at what to expect from the upcoming boys tournaments:

4A Boys Tournament Preview

Uintah looks to win its fifth straight team title, four of which have come in the 4A ranks. There could be a great battle for second place between Orem city rivals Mountain View and Timpanogos. Though the Bruins won their divisional meet, Timpanogos beat the Mountain View in their dual late in January. The Bruins qualified 21 wrestlers while Timpanogos will send 16 to the state meet. Payson, with 14 wrestlers, won’t likely win a trophy but should stay in the top five.

4A Weights to Watch: The 132-pound weight class features two returning state champions. Mountain View’s Glade Harman won this weight class last year, while Uintah’s Rykan Hacking won the 120-pound class. The two met earlier in the season with Harman picking up the win. Payson’s Kael Theobald is another grappler to eyeball as the Lion placed second to Harman at the divisional. He was actually leading Harman last year in the semifinals before having to default with a concussion injury. But Theobald should meet Hacking in the semifinals.

Perhaps a trophy could come down to a championship final at 175 pounds between Mountain View’s Hyrum Stafford and Xander Carlson of Timpanogos. Carlson beat Stafford in their dual and won the Divisional A tourney. Stafford came out on top at the Divisional B meet but should be wary of Uintah’s Chase McCurdy, who placed second to Carlson at divisionals.

At 190 pounds, Mountain View (Landon Shumway) and Timpanogos (Micah Wilcox) could meet up in a big semifinal match. Shumway won the Divisional B tourney where Wilcox was second to Ridgeline’s Seth Montierth. Shumway and Wilcox are both returning state placers and Shumway won by pin in their dual.

Preece’s 4A Team Predictions (Top 10): 1. Uintah 2. Mountain View 3. Timpanogos 4. Payson 5. Ridgeline 6. Mountain Crest 7. Snow Canyon 8. Stansbury 9. Crimson Cliffs 10. Cedar City.

Preece’s 4A Individual Predictions: 106 pounds: Joshua Garcia (Uintah) vs. Travis Angus (Uintah); 113 pounds: Maddax Hacking (Uintah) vs. Daxton Jolley (Payson); 120 pounds: Ethan Sharp (Uintah) vs. Jonah Shaw (Payson); 126 pounds: Michael Alexander (Uintah) vs. Benjamin Ploehn (Stansbury); 132 pounds: Rykan Hacking (Uintah) vs. Glade Harman (Mountain View); 138 pounds: Kaden Guymon (Snow Canyon) vs. Connor Knudsen (Timpanogos); 144 pounds: Brody Rhodes (Uintah) vs. Isaac Dickinson (Hurricane); 150 pounds: Myka Love (Jordan) vs. Jason Worthley (West Field); 157 pounds: Cason Smith (Snow Canyon) vs. Parker Streight (Uintah); 165 pounds: Fisher Jolley (Timpanogos) vs. Talon Stevens (Uintah); 175 pounds: Xander Carlson (Timpanogos) vs. Hyrum Stafford (Mountain View); 190 pounds: Max Anderson (Bear River) vs. Landon Shumway (Mountain View); 215 pounds: Cutler Rowley (Cedar City) vs. Isaac McGee (Mountain View); 285 pounds: Caden Young (Uintah) vs. Caleb Patton (Pine View).

5A Boys State Preview

Spanish Fork looks to repeat in 5A while Box Elder and Wasatch look to challenge. Box Elder qualified 26 wrestlers to Spanish Fork’s 22, while Wasatch will bring 17. The Wasps do have three returning state champions in Ben Kohler, Daxton Bonner and Max Richins. Maple Mountain and Salem Hills will battle with Viewmont to be in the top five. It should be noted that Spanish Fork’s Karson Shelley (120 pounds) seeks to be Spanish Fork’s first four-time state champion.

5A Weights to Watch: The 113-pound class has put Spanish Fork’s Taegen Leavitt and Box Elder’s Conley Evans on the same side of the bracket. Evans beat Leavitt last year to win the 106-pound title but Leavitt won the Divisional A tourney while Evans was upset by Wasatch’s William Shallenberger. Leavitt’s understudy Stetler Lloyd will hope to challenge the Wasp wrestler as the Dons hope to perhaps penetrate both of their wrestlers to the championship finals.

The 132-pound division had some major shakeups when Box Elder’s Kolvin Thompson beat Wasatch’s Ben Kohler at the Divisional B tourney. This put Thompson on the same side of the bracket as Spanish Fork’s Brady Vogelsberg. Vogelsberg needs to navigate through Roy’s Maximo Quintana before he meets up with Thompson. Meanwhile, Kohler will have to deal with Hunter’s Hunter Privett, the Divisional A champ.

At 190-pounds, last year’s runner-up Kaden Moore of Salem Hills is the man to beat. Moore could get a challenge from Wasatch’s Logan Tull, a sophomore who wrestled Moore tough in their dual meet. On the other side of the bracket, Spanish Fork’s Hyrum King and Box Elder’s Bodee Burnham could meet in a semifinal that might have titanic team implications.

Preece’s Boys 5A Team Predictions (Top 10): 1. Spanish Fork 2. Box Elder 3. Wasatch 4. Viewmont 5. Salem Hills 6. Maple Mountain 7. Roy 8. Cedar Valley 9. Springville 10. Olympus.

Preece’s Boys 5A Finalist Predictions: 106 pounds: Easton Shelley (Spanish Fork) vs. Ryker Winward (Box Elder); 113 pounds: Conley Evans (Box Elder) vs. William Shallenberger (Wasatch); 120 pounds: Karson Shelley (Spanish Fork) vs. Kaleb Blackner (Roy); 126 pounds: Kyler Spencer (Spanish Fork) vs. Mason Bingham (Box Elder); 132 pounds: Ben Kohler (Wasatch) vs. Kolvin Thompson (Box Elder); 138 pounds: Cahill Simons (Spanish Fork) vs. Daxton Bonner (Wasatch); 144 pounds: Alex Lindquist (Viewmont) vs. Max Richins (Wasatch); 150 pounds: Porter Olson (Spanish Fork) vs. Ian Nielsen (West); 157 pounds: Isaac Grieve (Highland) vs. Easton Connelly (Box Elder); 165 pounds: Ryker Olson (Spanish Fork) vs. Eli Jurgens (Box Elder); 175 pounds: Levi Birch (Maple Mountain) vs. Wyatt Hanssen (Wasatch); 190 pounds: Kaden Moore (Salem Hills) vs. Hyrum King (Spanish Fork); 215 pounds: Tuiono Valeti (Springville) vs. Moroni Mahe (Hillcrest) 285 pounds: Carter Rudolph (Roy) vs. Cody Kaleikini (Box Elder).

6A Boys Wrestling Preview

Layton goes for its third straight state title but Westlake wants to dethrone the Lancers. And Corner Canyon shouldn’t be counted out either. The 6A is full of high-quality wrestlers. American Fork, Lone Peak and Skyridge have great chances to finish in the top ten.

Returning local state champions include Corbyn Robison, Curtis Borge and Josh Fish for Westlake; Hanks Jacobson (2023) and Tege Kelley (2023) for American Fork; Caleb Jackson (Maple Mountain/5A), Ian Fritz (North Carolina) and Bradlee Farrer (2023) for Pleasant Grove.

6A Weights to Watch: At 132 pounds, you have three returning state champions. In fact, Layton’s Geronimo Rivera is going for his fourth state title. But the returning state champion at the weight is Westlake’s Curtis Borge, whose younger brother Israel lost to Rivera last year in the title match. Pleasant Grove’s Caleb Jackson, a move-in from Maple Mountain, hopes to win a 6A title but has the daunting task of going through Rivera on the top side of the bracket.

Another weight class with three returning state champions is 150 pounds. Westlake’s Josh Fish won this weight class last year while Noah Bull, now the favorite, won the 144-pound class last season. Bull beat American Fork’s Tege Kelley to win gold, but two seasons ago Kelley beat Fish to win his state title. Kelley and Fish should meet in a semifinal on the bottom half of the bracket.

At 157-pounds, Pleasant Grove’s Ian Fritz is the favorite. Fritz is a move-in that won a state title in North Carolina. He is on a potential collision course to meet Westlake’s Korbin Chuchran for the state title. Chuchran placed third in state last year at 144 pounds. But Fritz, on the top side of the bracket will have to deal with Corner Canyon’s Karl Ledbetter, while Chuchran’s path might even be more difficult as he has to navigate through Layton 2-time runner-up Gavin Regis.

Preece’s 6A Team Predictions (Top 10): 1. Layton 2. Westlake 3. Corner Canyon 4. Syracuse 5. Davis 6. Pleasant Grove 7. Riverton 8. Lone Peak 9. American Fork 10. Skyridge.

Preece’s 6A Individual Finalist Predictions: 106 pounds: Easton Olson (Riverton) vs. Kacen Jones (Corner Canyon); 113 pounds: Aiden Bastian (Layton) vs. Perry Fowler (Syracuse); 120 pounds: Lander Bosh (Layton) vs. Tanner Telford (Corner Canyon); 126 pounds: Mason Carlson (Syracuse) vs. Samuel Moody (Riverton); 132 pounds: Geronimo Rivera (Layton) vs. Curtis Borge (Westlake); 138 pounds: Wyatt Bingham (Pleasant Grove) vs. Israel Borge (Westlake); 144 pounds: Logan Crowther (Layton) vs. Austin Ellis (Davis); 150 pounds: Noah Bull (Layton) vs. Tege Kelley (American Fork); 157 pounds: Ian Fritz (Pleasant Grove) vs. Korbin Chuchran (Westlake); 165 pounds: Ryker Roundy (Davis) vs. Kaizen Detoles (Westlake); 175 pounds: Bradley Farrer (Pleasant Grove) vs. Kamren Wolff (Fremont); 195 pounds: Elijah Hawes (Layton) vs. Macrae Parker (Herriman); 215 pounds: Ridge Lindley (Fremont) vs. Leimana Fager (Corner Canyon); 285 pounds: Jared Smith (Lone Peak) vs. Kaydon Williams (Corner Canyon).
