The boys soccer state championships begin this weekend with both American Fork and Wasatch looking to repeat as champions in the 6A and 5A classifications, respectively.
Both teams enter the tournament in prime form, with the Cavemen (10-4) earning the No. 2 seed based on RPI calculated by the High School Activities Association. American Fork after battled through an always tough Region 3, and the Wasps (14-2) being granted the No. 4 seed.
Here’s a look at the 6A, 5A and 4A tournaments.
CLASS 6A
Region 3 offers some of the most competitive play statewide, which speaks to the fact that three of the top teams in that region were granted the top three seeds in the state tournament.
Lone Peak (15-2) earned the No. 1 seed after winning six straight in region play, which included wins over both American Fork and Skyridge to finish off the regular season. The Knights will be afforded a first round-bye and then take on the winner of Westlake vs Corner Canyon.
The Cavemen will take on the winner of Lehi vs. Copper Hills while Skyridge (12-5) will enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed and face off against either Syracuse or Mountain Ridge in the second round.
Pleasant Grove (10-7) proved as tough an out as any in Region 3 play and will take on Fremont in the first round after being tabbed as the No. 10 seed.
CLASS 5A
Wasatch rolled through the regular season, but was still granted just the No. 4 seed, despite being the defending 5A champions. Led by super striker Jayden Cosper, the Wasps will take on the winner of West vs. Cyprus in the second round.
Spanish Fork (11-4) and Maple Mountain (9-7) were given the No. 7 and No. 10 seeds, respectively, with the Dons set to take on Maple Mountain in the second round should it defeat Clearfield in the first.
Salem Hills (9-7) checks in as the No. 11 seed and will take on West Jordan in the first round. No. 21-seeded Timpview (4-11) will take on Kearns.
CLASS 4A
Orem (10-2) ended its season on a down note with a loss to Mountain View, but still enters the state tournament as Utah County’s top team as the No. 3 seed. The Tigers will take on the winner of Park City vs Mountain Crest in the second round.
Seeds No. 7-9 were allotted to Timpanogos (9-4), Mountain View (9-5) and Provo (9-7), respectively. Their close proximity in rankings speaks to the ultra competitive play in Region 8 throughout the season.
“Every game is a tough challenge in this region. There’s no game where you can rest,” said Provo coach Jayson Mansanarez following a win over Orem a few weeks before the close of the season. “So we feel we’ll be well-prepared for the state playoffs just playing in this region.”
Mountain View and Timpanogos will both be afforded byes in the first round while Provo will play Cottonwood for the opportunity to square off against the Bruins in the second.
