The Timpview-Springville 5A Region 7 football game Friday night was reminiscent of a Utah Valley contest played the week previous.
Unlike the American Fork-Lone Peak finish — which ended on a completed Hail Mary pass just short of the goal line on the game’s final play — there was no controversy here. Instead of being ruled just inches short of the goal line, Timpview wide receiver Dennis Tua’One was brought down by Springville’s Sam Nadauld two full yards away from paydirt, preserving a hard fought 9-7 victory on home turf for the Red Devils.
It was the second straight win in the series for Springville.
“We knew they were going deep and we knew they were going to No 8 (Tua’one), he’s their guy so we were bracketing him the whole night,” said Nadauld. “The ball was up and I just brought him down.”
The game was dominated by the defenses as neither team scored in the second half. Timpview took an early lead when TJ Tuha ran it in from five yards out with 5:55 remaining in the first quarter. Easton Baird split the uprights and the Thunderbirds were out in front 7-0.
Eventually, the Springville offense struck back with Nadauld taking a 6-yard pass from Beckett Burton. But the extra point was blocked leaving Timpview ahead 7-6.
Timpview made some critical mistakes at the end of the half.
Springville was able to put together a drive after Dallas Torres secured an interception and returned it 25 yards. Burton then spotted Damian Tupou on a 37-yard connection. Facing a critical third down, Burton was able to scramble for a first down. Eventually, Timpview’s defense was able to force a 36-yard field goal with just five seconds left in the half. The kick sailed wide left but a running-into-the-kicker penalty gave Springville another chance on an untimed down. This time Ben Smith split the uprights giving the Red Devils a 9-7 lead it would never relinquish.
A critical aspect of the game was Springville’s ability to get turnovers and the general sloppy play by the Timpview offense. The Thunderbirds used two quarterbacks with Mathew Manuma starting the game but he was relieved by Marley Fakatoumafi, only to see Manuma return for Timpview’s final drive that ended up just short of the end zone.
Treyton Harris had two of those picks for Springville and one that looked like it might ice the game in the final stanza.
After the interception, Springville drove down to the Timpview 17-yard line and faced a fourth down. Instead of electing to go for the field goal that would have required the Thunderbirds to score a touchdown to win, Springville decided to go for it but Burton’s attempted pass to Nadauld fell incomplete.
This left 1:04 left on the clock and Timpview had one remaining timeout. Manuma was able to move Timpview up the field with two completions to Tua’one. After two incomplete passes, the Thunderbirds lost valuable time when Springville’s Brooks Johnson sacked Manuma to bring up fourth down.
Timpview kept their hopes alive when Manuma found Steel Richards on a 30-yard completion down to the Springville 37-yard line with just five ticks remaining on the clock. Instead of trying a long field goal, Timpview opted to try the Hail Mary pass which was caught by Tua’one but two yards short of the goal line.
“I’m having a hard time breathing and my heart rate is up there,” said Springville head coach Dave Valeti.
The Red Devil head coach was happy to get the win and particularly about the play of his defense.
“I’m super proud of our defense. Offense made some plays when they had to. We were able to stay on the field a bit. But hats off to our defense, they played great ball.”
Valeti also praised the play of Johnson, who is just a freshman and made two critical sacks including the one in the final Timpview drive that took away critical time and field position from the Thunderbirds.
“He’s an amazing player for us. Obviously, he has a bright future, a relentless kid.”
As for Johnson, he was all about the team knowing that a win over a traditional power like Timpview is significant.
“It (the win) means everything. We proved ourselves against a good team and I’m so proud of our whole team,” Johnson said. “I just try to give my best every play and see how it goes.”
Springville (6-2, 4-1) will actually complete their regular season next week when the Red Devils host Spanish Fork (6-2, 3-1) in a critical 5A Region 7 clash. As for Timpview (3-5, 3-2), the Thunderbirds will return to their home field to take on Pleasant Grove (4-4, 1-3). Both games will actually be held Thursday night at 7 p.m.
