Springville head coach Dave Valeti watches the action in a Region 7 football game against Spanish Fork on Thursday, October 8, 2026.

Springville head coach Dave Valeti calls running back and linebacker Treyton Harris “the heart and soul of the team.”

On Senior Night, the Red Devil senior team captain electrified the faithful with a 86-yard sprint down Spanish Fork’s sideline that broke open a close 14-7 contest in the third quarter as the Red Devils secured a 28-14 5A Region 7 triumph on the gridiron.

The play was a simple pitch that he took from quarterback Beckett Burton but Harris was able to turn the corner and show off his speed.

“I caught the pitch, I saw a couple of defenders come up and I ran around them and then my fullback Wesley (Yearsley) laid a really good block on that corner out there,” Harris said of the play that really put Springville in control of the game.

Harris was quick to compliment Yearsley and the offensive line, not only for the efforts on the scoring run but throughout the night.

“He’s a dog,” Harris first said of Yearsley. In regards to the offensive line Harris added, “I love those guys. They sacrifice for me so I can get yards and they protect the quarterback so he can get throws off.”

The defense played its part, thwarting the Dons offense and forcing a fumble that was recovered by Pale Tumimavavae which led to Harris’ run to paydirt.

Spanish Fork came out ready to play and actually scored the first points when quarterback Nixon Warren plunged in from one yard out. The touchdown drive was set up when Kingston Johnson stripped Harris of the football, which was then recovered by Logan Beckstead.

It took Springville a while to punch back as the Red Devils went on a long sustained drive that stretched over both the first and second quarter. Then finally quarterback Beckett Burton found Siaosi “Leka” Toki wide open in the end zone on a 6-yard score.

With the score tied at 7-7, Springville forced a Spanish Fork punt and quickly responded with a 66-yard touchdown connection between Burton and Damian Tupou. Phoenix Marks split the upright and the Red Devils led 14-7.

Then things got a bit strange.

Spanish Fork engineered a nice drive, taking the pigskin deep into Red Devil territory. Inside Springville’s 20-yard line with just seven ticks left in the first half and no remaining timeouts, the Dons completed a pass at the 3-yard line. But the clock showed zeroes. After nearly a minute delay, the officials ruled that there were still two seconds left and then marked the ball ready to play.

Warren then spiked the ball but the officials then ruled that it took both remaining seconds and the half ended 14-7 with the Spanish Fork coaches and fans quite upset thinking that there should be at least one second left for the Dons to run another play and possibly kick a field goal.

Before the second half started, Springville was penalized 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct as the Senior Night presentations along with a performance of the marching band went too long. But Marks did a good job kicking the ball deep enough while the Red Devil kickoff coverage did its job limiting the damage as the Dons returned the kickoff just out to their 30-yard line.

The defenses of both teams stood up but Spanish Fork was able to march late in the third quarter. But that’s when the Dons coughed up the pigskin and then Harris turned the game on a dime with his 86-yard touchdown jaunt.

Springville then basically iced the game in the final stanza when Toki scored a second time on a 29-yard reception with 8:12 remaining.

Spanish Fork did score one more time when Mason Snow hauled in a 32-yard pass from Warren with Preston Jones connecting on the point after to make 28-14 with 5:30 left on the clock.

The Dons elected to kick the ball away but Springville never relinquished the pigskin as Harris went to work moving the chains. The ability to melt away the clock didn’t go unnoticed by Valeti.

“To put the game away with the four-minute offense and getting to the best formation in football (the victory formation to kneel the ball) was fun.”

Valeti also complimented his defense, which stopped two Don fourth down conversion attempts in the second half.

“Everybody stepped up and we are playing some sound defense,” said Valeti.

Though Springville eventually took control, the game was far from easy as the Dons did some things that surprised Valeti and earned his praise, especially in light of the Dons losing starting quarterback Hawkin Rasmussen the week previous.

“Hats off first to Spanish (Fork). I mean losing their quarterback that was playing so well,” said Valeti. “That Warren kid (who has moved from wide receiver to play quarterback) is special. They have a great O-line, their D-line gave us fits. I’m just happy for the boys that we were able to stay locked in and now we can heal up a little bit.”

Springville (7-2, 5-1) finished up its regular season and has a bye in Week 10, while Spanish Fork (6-3, 3-2) hosts Timpview (3-6, 2-3). That is scheduled for Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
