The unusually wet fall is playing havoc with high school sports, which are just now heading into state tournament season.
Competitors in the 5A boys golf state tournament at Bountiful Ridge were unable to finish Monday’s first round due to the weather and returned on Tuesday. Through rain, wind and even thick fog, the first round was completed.
At that point, the course was deemed unplayable, leading officials to cancel the second round.
Timpview managed to persevere through the bad weather to win the school’s 13th team title but first since 2015.
“We just haven’t had quite enough to get to that top spot,” T-Birds head coach Jeff Ward said. “We’ve been up in the top five many times and we finished third a few years ago. It’s not easy to win state championships.”
Timpview freshman Nick Miller — son of BYU director of golf Todd Miller and grandson of former PGA legend Johnny Miller — earned medalist honors at -9 (62), four strokes ahead of teammate Calvin Lillywhite at -5 (66). Spanish Fork’s Jace Anderson was third at -3 (68), Wyatt Biagi of Olympus was fourth at -2 (69) and Fremont’s Luke Manning, Spanish Fork’s Derek Harris, Timpview’s Christian Whitmore, Viewmont’s Chase Dalton and Viewmont’s Corver Barnes all tied for fifth at -1 (70).
“Nothing really bothers Nick,” Ward said. “He just goes about his business and plays with a smile on his face. We all knew that the weather going to be crappy, we knew it was going to be wet and we knew it was going to be cold. As a team we talked about it and prepared for it.”
Miller started off hot with an eagle on the first hole and had to overcome just one bogey on the front nine with four birdies. He birdied 11, 12 and 13 to stretch out his lead and scored a birdie on 18 as well.
“That was kind of when the fog set in again,” Ward said. “By then we were essentially done. We waited for about 30 minutes out on the course, and they finally just called it.”
Timpview’s lineup included Miller, Lillywhite (the only senior), junior Asher Runia and sophomores Whitmore, Zac Rust and Charlie Jeppson. The T-Birds finished at -8, logging four birdies and four eagles to card a final score of 276. Spanish Fork was second at -4 (280) with Olympus a distant third at +8 (292), Skyline, which had won two state titles in a row, was fourth at +9 (293) and Fremont fifth at +12 (296).
“One of things that really helped us this year, honestly, is that we played in a really tough region,” Ward said. “Spanish Fork finished second in Region 7 and we only beat them by three strokes over eight tournaments. They are a really good team. Every single week we knew we had to bring our best stuff because Spanish Fork was going to be right there. Us and Spanish Fork were the only teams under par here.
“Yesterday (Monday) we had the rain but we also had fog delays. The rain just hammered us and with the fog, we couldn’t see 20 feet in front of us.”
Timpview won team state gold in 1979-83, 1985, 1987-1990, 2013 and 2015.
With just one senior on the roster, expect the T-Birds to be back in the thick of things next season, hopefully with better weather.
“Who knows?” Ward said. “Championships, in my opinion, are won and lost in the offseason. All of our kids played junior golf in the summer in really competitive tournaments. That’s what pays dividends in fall with high school golf.”
