Corner Canyon would not be denied its second consecutive 6A girls volleyball championship, even facing a stubborn and relentless Skyridge side.

The top-seeded Chargers — with just one loss to a Utah team all season — fought past the No. 2 Falcons in straight sets (25-23, 25-20, 30-28) on Wednesday at the UCCU Center.

Last season, Corner Canyon beat Skyridge 3-1 in the 6A final.

“We didn’t give up,” Falcons coach Taylor Hifo said. “Our goal was to fight to the end, and I appreciate that. I think we could have seen a little more execution at the beginning, and especially in the second set because it gave them a bit of momentum.”

Corner Canyon (29-3) led most of Set 1 before Skyridge pulled even at 17-17 on a kill from Emma White. The set was tied five more times but two Falcons hitting errors gave the Chargers a 24-22 advantage. Anzlee Holt fired down a kill to hold on at 24-23 but Majia Mortensen drilled a shot for the winner at 25-23.

Skyridge trailed by as many as eight points in Set 2 (17-9) on a Mortensen kill but battled back to trail by just two, 22-20 after a White ace. Corner Canyon scored the final three points on two Mortensen kills and a swing from Maia Schwalger to win 25-20 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.

White scored out of the back row in Set 3 to pull Skyridge within one at 17-16 and Lucy Meck pounded down an overpass to tie things up at 20-all. Corner Canyon reached championship point three times, but the Falcons came through with big plays to fight off the end including a huge solo block from Meck and a kill from Sienna Kuresa. Finally, Schwalger went off the block to get her team to a fourth championship point at 29-28 and the Chargers rejected a Skyridge swing for the winner at 30-28.

“The biggest thing for us was to just keep getting the ball up, getting touches and trying to deflate their energy by digging the big, big swings,” Hifo said. “They have a lot of that to put the ball away. We had scrappy, scrappy defense.”

Mortensen — a 6-foot-4 junior whose mother, Nina Puikkonen played at BYU and sister, Ellie, plays there now — was a problem at the net all match long and finished with 12 kills for Corner Canyon. Berkleigh Minnick paced the Chargers with 14 kills.

White had a double-double for Skyridge (25-7) with 12 kills and 10 digs and Kuresa added nine kills and 17 digs.

White, Holt, setter Allycia Maae and libero Estelle Slaney are key seniors but the Falcons return plenty of talent to try and make another run in 2027.

The only girls volleyball state championship won by Skyridge came in 2018.

“I think we’ll just keep building on the culture and hopefully we can get the (gold) trophy in the end,” said Hifo, the former BYU setter who is 52-10 in two seasons at the helm. “I think the skills were there but we grew a lot mentally and figured out how things meshed for the team on the court, and that was special to see.”

Starting at $4.32/week.
