UVU men’s soccer adds 10 to spring roster

Among the international athletes are defenders Dan McKay (Wellington, New Zealand), Jacob Deng (Juba, South Sudan), and Toke Amtrup (Svendborg, Denmark), along with forward Sharif Sayawu (Agona Duakwa, Ghana).
The remaining six feature goalkeeper Kolby Sessions (Holladay, Utah); defenders Deontae Ben (Roy, Utah) and Ashton Wheeler (Draper, Utah); midfielders Mason Abdella (Puyallup, Wash.) and Jacob Vincent (Salt Lake City, Utah); and forward Brayden Ikeme (Lehi, Utah).
McKay, a native of New Zealand’s capital city, played his club soccer for Australian League side Wellington Phoenix in their academy system. McKay was named reserve team player of the year in 2022 and was named to the league’s Team of the Season in 2023. Wellington most recently finished as runners-up in the A-League at the end of the 2023-24 season.
Deng joins the program after spending the last three seasons as a practice player in the Central Arkansas and Gardner-Webb programs. Deng prepped at Justice HS in Falls Church, Virginia, and played his club soccer at the Villarreal Virginia Academy, which is partnered with La Liga club Villarreal CF.
Amtrup comes to Orem after spending the last two seasons at Saint Mary’s in California. Amtrup appeared in 26 games with 16 starts for the Gaels, logging 1,243 minutes and scoring a goal. Amtrup was named to the WCC All-Freshman team and was named the team’s Newcomer of the Year in 2023.
Sayawu, a forward from Agona Duakwa, Ghana, prepped at Odupong Senior HS and played his club soccer at the Phoenix Academy, which has produced numerous MLS, USL, and NCAA Division I athletes since its inception in 2018. Sayawu was his team’s top goal scorer in 2023 with 15, and was named the Phoenix Academy Showcase’s best player in 2024.
Sessions also returns to Utah after spending the last two seasons at Saint Mary’s. Sessions appeared in just two games, including a clean sheet with eight saves in his first career start against San José State that earned him WCC Player of the Week honors.
Ben makes the short move down I-15 after spending the 2024 season at Westminster. Ben appeared in 16 games with 13 starts for the Griffins, scoring three goals and adding an assist in 973 minutes played. Prior to Westminster, Ben spent two years at Snow College.
Wheeler prepped at Corner Canyon HS and played his club soccer for City SC, with whom he was a team captain. Wheeler also played for the Utah ODP teams.
Abdella comes to Utah after spending a highly productive year at JUCO Highline College in Des Moines, Wash., where he scored 12 goals and added 13 assists. Prior to Highline, Abdella prepped at Emerald Ridge HS and played his club soccer for Washington Premier FC.
Vincent returns to his home state after spending one season at Yavapai College in Arizona, where he appeared in five games. Vincent prepped at East HS in Salt Lake, and played his club soccer for Cobras FC, CD Ferrovalvulas, and KS Milan Milanowek.
Ikeme prepped just up the road at Lehi HS, where he scored seven goals and added four assists over his final two years. Ikeme also played his club soccer for La Roca.
