CEDAR CITY — Utah Valley earned a 3-0 shutout at Southern Utah on Sunday afternoon at Thunderbird Soccer Field.

The Wolverines improve to 8-4-2 overall and remain unbeaten in WAC play at 4-0-1. Southern Utah falls to 2-9-2 overall and 1-4-0 in league play.

“We’re happy to get a shutout and a result on the road,” head coach Chris Lemay said. “It was a beautiful day and the field was in great condition.”

UVU struck early when Bailey Peterson burst down the left flank and served a cross to Ruby Hladek, who gathered and finished with her right foot in the third minute for a 1-0 lead. The advantage doubled in the 68th minute after Marie Quentel’s one-touch found Quinn Rustand, who slipped a ball to Josie Shepherd on the left side of the six; Shepherd buried the left-footed finish to make it 2-0. In the 72nd, Sadie Beardall beat the keeper to a loose ball in the box and laid it back to Quentel, who ripped in a goal from the top of the area for the final margin.

Utah Valley outshot SUU 14-3 with a 10-2 edge on frame and held an 8-1 advantage in corners. Faith Webber and Hladek paced UVU with three shots apiece. Goalkeeper Leah Wolf recorded her second clean sheet of the season, playing nearly 84 minutes with two saves.

Utah Valley wraps up a three-match WAC road swing at California Baptist on Saturday, Oct. 18, in Riverside. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. MT on ESPN+. UVU then returns home to face Southern Utah on Oct. 23 and Utah Tech on Oct. 27.

Men’s soccer slips past San Jose State

Jose Luis Martin Montealegre and Elijah Gozo scored first half goals to lead Utah Valley (8-1-1, 2-1 WAC) to a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the San José State Spartans (8-3-2, 1-2 WAC) on Saturday night at UCCU Stadium.

Tensions were high all night, reaching a boiling point in the 51st minute with Noah Pogue and SJSU keeper Edgar Guerra receiving straight red cards for their role in the fracas.

For the second game in a row, the game was put under a weather delay, this time late in the match at the 81:57 mark. The wind was strong all night, fortunately switching directions at half time so that it was at the Wolverines’ back for both halves.

The Spartans got on the board first in the 25th minute when Gilberto Rivera fed Arnold Matshazi on the left side of the box then curled a shot over Sebastian Løvendal into the top-right corner.

Utah Valley equalized in the 28th minute on the third of three consecutive corner kicks. Keegan Oyler lofted a ball to the far post, where it found Martin Montealegre. The Spaniard’s looping header went across the face of goal and just inside the near post.

Gozo put the Wolverines in front in the 40th minute off a through ball from Martin Montealegre. Gozo cut down the right flank into the box and ripped a shot past Guerra for his first goal at the collegiate level.

Straight out of the post-weather delay restart, the Wolverines nearly doubled their lead with Oyler’s shot hitting the left post. Mason Abdella’s follow-up went high.

The Spartans had a few chances in the final minutes, but none of their shots reached the net.

Utah Valley will have a week off before hosting the California Baptist Lancers next Saturday, Oct. 18. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. MDT, and tickets can be purchased at GoUVU.com/MSOCtix.

Starting at $4.32/week.
