Utah Valley University men’s basketball head coach Todd Phillips has announced the hiring of Andrew May as an assistant coach/offensive coordinator for the program.
May arrives at Utah Valley after serving as the head coach at Snow College, where he built one of the top junior college programs in the nation. Over four seasons, he led the Badgers to a 102-26 overall record, including an impressive 61-7 record over his last two seasons. His tenure at Snow also included a historic 32-2 campaign during the 2024-25 season that saw Snow finish ranked No. 1 nationally for the first time in school history and earn the No. 1 overall seed in the NJCAA National Tournament. His team went a perfect 15-0 in Scenic West Athletic Conference play during the 2024-25 season. May is the winningest coach in Snow College basketball history.
“I’m thrilled to welcome Coach Andrew May to our staff,” said Phillips. “I have known Andrew for many years. He’s a great offensive mind and a tireless recruiter. He’s a coach who is always thinking outside the box. His ability to develop players and put points on the board speaks for itself. We couldn’t be more excited to have him in our corner.”
During his time at Snow College, May guided the Badgers to four straight 20-win seasons and helped the program reach several milestones, including the school’s first undefeated conference season, first No. 1 national ranking, and first No. 1 overall seed at the NJCAA National Tournament. He was named the 2025 NJCAA Media National Coach of the Year, Scenic West Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, and West District Coach of the Year.
“I am excited for the opportunity to join Coach Phillips and his amazing staff at Utah Valley University as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator,” said May. “Growing up just a couple blocks from UVU, I am bullish on the incredible progress, momentum and trajectory of the university and the leadership of the athletic department from its early days of junior college to the new horizon of the Big West. I am thrilled to be reunited with Coach Phillips, who has been making history with the highest winning percentage in UVU history and has won back-to-back WAC championships. I look forward to helping our players grow to fulfill their dreams and inspiring the great community of students, fans, boosters, faculty and staff of Wolverine Nation.”
A native of Mt. Pleasant, Utah, May — who also coached under Dave Rose at BYU — played at Lone Peak High School and began his coaching career at Orem High School. He earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in exercise science from BYU. He and his wife, Marissa, are the parents of five children.
Men’s soccer announces non-conference slate
Utah Valley men’s soccer head coach Michael Chesler has announced his team’s 2026 non-conference schedule ahead of the Wolverines’ inaugural season in The Big West and their first with Chesler at the helm.
Including exhibition games, Utah Valley will play five home games at UCCU Stadium and four road contests as part of the traditional non-conference portion of the schedule. The Wolverines will play three non-league games later in the season against Pac-12 opponents as part of The Big West and Pac-12’s scheduling agreement. Season tickets will go on sale July 1.
UVU will open the season with a pair of friendlies on August 7 and 14. The Wolverines will host Snow College on the 7th, then travel to Colorado to face perennial College Cup contender Denver on the 14th.
The Wolverines will officially open the season with back-to-back home games against the Pacific Tigers and the Central Arkansas Bears on August 20 and 24. Utah Valley will then head to the Bay Area to take on the Santa Clara Broncos on August 30.
September kicks off with a visit from the Omaha Mavericks out of the Summit League on the 3rd. Utah Valley will then make its first-ever trip to West Virginia to take on the 2020 National Champion and 2024 National Runner-Up Marshall Thundering Herd on Sept. 10.
Utah Valley wraps up the traditional portion of non-conference play with a home contest against the Stetson Hatters on Sept. 17 before heading to St. George for the Old Hammer Rivalry at Utah Tech on Sept. 21.
The Wolverines’ first Big West conference schedule will be announced in the coming weeks. Utah Valley will play five games against the new-look Big West — UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, Sacramento State, and CSUN — as well as three non-conference games against the Pac-12, with those opponents still being finalized.
Katchske, Carpenter named to All-WAC Baseball team
ARLINGTON, Texas – The Western Athletic Conference announced its annual postseason baseball awards. Utah Valley had two earn first team honors, with Hunter Katschke gettting the nod at first base, and Kaden Carpenter taking an outfield spot. It’s the fourth consecutive season that UVU has gotten two players on the first team.
“I’m very proud of the accomplishments of these two,” said UVU head coach Nate Rasmussen. “We made many changes within their approaches and mechanics, and both were rewarded for their perseverance through that process. Both came to work every day, and I’m excited about where their future will take them in this game.”
Katschke earns his first selection to the All-Conference first team after earning second team honors at Utah Tech last season. He finished 2026, hitting .291 with a school record 22 homers, while adding 55 RBIs and finishing with a .704 slugging. The Las Vegas native finished with four multi-homer games this season, including in his UVU debut against Pacific.
Carpenter grabbed first-team honors in his one season in Orem, where he finished hitting .338 in 54 games for UVU with 17 homers. He finished the season homering in five straight games while adding 58 RBIs for the Wolverines’ offense this season. He added .313 against WAC pitching with eight home runs and 16 RBIs.
Tanuvasa included in American Samoa Olympics pool
Utah Valley’s Naia Tanuvasa has been named to the athlete pool for the American Samoa National Women’s Basketball team as they search to earn a spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympic Games.
Tanuvasa will be a junior in the upcoming 2026-2027 season and joined the Wolverines for the 2025-2026 season, where she played in 28 games and set UVU’s single-game steals record with nine against La Sierra, where she added seven assists and two blocks.
She had a standout prep career at Highland’s Lone Peak High School, where she led the Knights to three Utah 6A State Championships and four region titles. Tanuvasa earned first-team All-State as a senior after scoring 14.5 PPG and grabbing six boards per game. When not on the court, she excelled on the pitch, earning Provo’s Daily Herald Soccer Player of the Year in 2024.
American Samoa last medaled at the 2019 Pacific Games, where they earned gold after taking home silver in 2007 and 2015. If they were to qualify for the Olympics, it would be the first-time ever that the nation has entered a women’s basketball team in the international tournament.
