Utah Valley improves to 2-2-1 on the season with the win, while Washington State falls to 2-3-1.

With the match still scoreless, Nixan Jackson received the ball on the right side outside the box and sent a cross all the way across the field to Booth on the left side. Booth settled the ball before firing a left-footed shot past the Washington State goalkeeper and into the net for the game winner.

The goal was Booth’s first of the season, while Jackson picked up her second assist of the year.

“We’re excited about the result and picking up three points, and we’re excited about a shutout,” Utah Valley head coach Chris Lemay said. “I thought in the second half we were a lot more dynamic than we were in the first half.”

Madeleine Boucher and the Wolverine defense recorded their first shutout of the season. Boucher made four saves in goal to earn the clean sheet.

Utah Valley controlled much of the match statistically, outshooting Washington State 19-6, including an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Wolverines also held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.

Booth led all players with five shots, including two on goal, while Sam Curtis added four shots with one on frame.

Despite the victory, Lemay said he wanted more from his team early in the match.

“To be very honest, I was frustrated with the way that we came out,” Lemay said. “I thought that we made it a much closer game than it should have been.”

The Wolverines will wrap up their two-match stay in Hawai’i on Sunday against former WAC foe New Mexico State. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. HT/5 p.m. MT. Utah Valley will then return home to UCCU Stadium to host San Diego State on Saturday, Sept. 12.

Men’s soccer forges 1-1 draw with Omaha

Jose Luis Martin Montealegre scored his second goal of the season and Kolby Sessions made three saves as Utah Valley remained unbeaten with a 1-1 draw to the Omaha Mavericks on Thursday night at UCCU Stadium.

The Wolverines and Mavericks were evenly matched most of the night, but Omaha had the most dangerous of the scoring chances, holding a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal. Utah Valley played the final 23 minutes of the match a man down after Nil Grau was shown a second yellow in the 67th minute.

Sessions was called into action in the sixth minute as Maguire Perkins spun free in the attacking third, but his curling shot was tipped behind for a corner. Sessions made his second save about 90 seconds later on a low effort by Mikey Stukenholtz.

Grau was shown his first yellow in the 25th minute after a lengthy video review.

Utah Valley got shots away in the 30th and 44th minutes, but Max Palmer’s header went wide left and Mason Abdella’s long-range effort was blocked.

Omaha scored first after being retroactively awarded a penalty in the 58th minute. Toke Amtrup was called for a foul on Derek Johnson, with Brett Perkins converting the spot kick.

The Wolverines weren’t behind for long, netting an equalizer just nine minutes later. Grau cut toward the end line and laid it back for Abdella, whose deflected effort struck woodwork and went almost straight up. Montealegre was able to box out his man and head home the goal from a few feet out.

The euphoria quickly turned into frustration as Grau was shown his second yellow just eight seconds after the ensuing restart for a shove on Stukenholtz.

Despite playing a man down, the Wolverines held most of the possession down the stretch. The lone shot on goal was a tame effort in the 76th minute that went right at Sessions.

Utah Valley will now face by far its toughest test of the young season, traveling to West Virginia to face the No. 15 Marshall Thundering Herd. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. MT, and the match will be streamed live on ESPN+.

Women’s volleyball swept by South Dakota

VERMILLION, S.D. – Utah Valley women’s volleyball fell 3-0 (21-25, 20-25, 16-25) to South Dakota on Thursday night in the opening match of the South Dakota Classic. UVU (0-4) was led by Evalyn Medaris, who tallied seven kills to set a new career high, along with 15 assists and nine digs in the match. Miley Thunstrom and Olivia Gloeckner each had seven kills in the match. Lauren Medeck led USD (2-2) with a match-high 13 kills on 28 attacks.
