Safe with the president? Hardly

By Randy Wright - | Jul 20, 2012

Interesting Point No. 1: With only 109 days to the 2012 presidential election, Barack Obama is playing it safe on guns, carefully avoiding the subject even after one of the most horrific incidents of murder in America — at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo. In a speech on Friday in Fort Myers, Fla., Obama didn’t even mention the word “gun.”

It is remarkable that any Democrat, let alone the Democratic president of the United States, would miss an opportunity to complain about guns or to link the theater shooting to the evil Second Amendment. But Obama doesn’t want to upset the political apple cart. Attacking guns right now could be counterproductive for his campaign.

Interesting point No. 2: In the Fort Myers speech, the president made long, flowery references to being “united as one American family,” etc., and he made us feel all warm and fuzzy by promising to keep us safe — meaning, I suppose, safe from now on because he certainly didn’t keep anybody safe at the Batman movie. “The federal government stands ready to do whatever is necessary to bring whoever is responsible for this heinous crime to justice,” Obama said. “And we will take every step possible to ensure the safety of all of our people.”

Exactly how that is accomplished in a free society the president didn’t say. That is because he cannot say. In point of fact there is no way to ensure the safety of all the people in a free society. In a free society, evil people are free to commit random heinous crimes. It is one of the unfortunate side effects of liberty.

People like shooter James Holmes are unpredictable, and that means President Obama is not going to be around to save us when he strikes.
