“Paper Girls” premieres Friday, July 29, 2022, on Prime Video.

The popular young adult graphic novel franchise “Paper Girls” by Brian K. Vaughan is now a series on Prime Video. The stories are touted as “Young Adult Adventures;” however, due to the language, violence, language, frightening scenes and did I mention language, it is not for very young adults. This is a fun adventure; however, keep in mind the language is filled with the “F” word in almost every scene.

The night after Halloween, four paper delivery girls, Mac (Sofia Rosinsky), Erin (Riley Lai Nelet), K.J. (Fina Strazza) and Tiffany (Camryn Jones), all experience a strange encounter. While delivering their papers in the wee hours of the morning, they are mysteriously transported from 1988 to several decades in the future where they are confused and eventually learn what is going on with the timeline and wonder if they will ever make it back to their own time. These 12-year-olds are strong-minded and determined to stick together to get home, but through their adventure they discover things about themselves they don’t know and in many instances do not like.

If you met your future self and discovered she was a lazy, partying, brilliant woman who threw away her life’s dreams, what would you think? Or if you found out your future self was a total loser, how would you feel? And if you discovered your younger self did not live long enough to be in this new timeline, would you be sad or relieved? And finally, if you discovered your personal life was not what you had in mind, well, let’s just say you might be in for a big surprise.

That is what awaits this foursome as they try to figure out how to solve their problem and get back to their own timeline — that is, if they actually do want to get back. And just how and why did they time travel in the first place? That brings up a whole new aspect to the stories. Think of “The Terminator” where there are good and bad forces at work. This is the same kind of premise. Who can they trust?

The comic books won several Eisner Awards, and Amazon is putting its weight behind this new series. It is an intriguing story that will keep viewers wondering where it all ends. And if the season finale is anything to judge, there will be a second season with more from this foursome who will steal the imaginations of young viewers.

With the language and violence elements, younger viewers are not encouraged to watch; however, older teens will enjoy this adventure.

“Paper Girls” premieres Friday on Prime Video. There are eight episodes in this season. The four stars are wonderful in their roles and undoubtedly have long careers in front of them.
