The Reluctant Traveler

He’s back! Actor Eugene Levy returns for a third season of his docuseries “The Reluctant Traveler.” In this eight-episode season Levy travels the globe to fill his bucket in the ultimate travel bucket list.

“I really appreciate what this show is trying to do for me,” said host and executive producer Eugene Levy. “But to be a real seasoned traveler, you need to have a strong sense of adventure and curiosity, and I’m ashamed to say over the past two seasons I’ve developed neither. But I have to admit I’m having a lot of fun putting in the effort. So the beat goes on, apparently.”

So, where is Levy traveling to and experiencing this season? He begins in Oaxaca, Mexico for the “Day of the Dead” festival. Fans of the Disney film “Coco” will understand the significance of this festival, however, as Levy discovers, there is much more to it.

Celebrating and remembering the dead might be an unusual concept for many westerners however, as the actor discovers, it is a family festival filled with hope and love.

From Mexico Levy experiences the food, music, and history of Vienna. He attends the Vienna Philharmonic Ball dressed to the 9s and tackles the traditional Viennese waltz. Levy also gets a once-in-a-lifetime experience of conducting the orchestra, although it is in rehearsals, but still an exciting and memorable experience.

This now “seasoned” traveler discovers local delicacies that becomes some of his favorite foods, and they do look delicious.

A big change from Vienna is his RV travels through Louisiana, where Levy learns about RV life and sees the camaraderie that fellow RVers have for each other. A boat trip through the Bayou and a paddle wheel trip on the Mississippi are also on the schedule.

The food in Louisiana is another thing altogether as Eugene tastes boiled peanuts and crawfish. It’s a far cry from the elegant food in Austria.

None other than Prince William hosts Levy at the historic Windsor Castle. The Prince is a great tour guide as he explains the history and jokes with the actor. It is a fun and definitely not a regular occurrence to have the future King of England as a tour guide. And sitting down in a pub with the Prince while discussing his ideas for the future, his family, and his heritage is something very few people can say they did, but Eugene Levy can.

Next on the list is an eye-opening visit to Seoul, South Korea. It is here where Levy learns about the Korean culture and modern life in that country. He not only sees the burgeoning K-pop music industry, but also learns about influencers and how technology is the number one activity in that country.

As an added treat this season, Eugene’s daughter Sarah accompanies him to Ireland where they uncover Sarah’s roots in the country — on her mother’s side. She has a long family history there, Sarah discovers something exciting about her ancestors.

As the country gets ready for Saint Patrick’s Day, Eugene and Sarah enjoy some of the local industries, including a unique way of making Irish coffee. If you haven’t noticed, food and drink are part of every stop for Eugene Levy!

In India Levy is introduced to the country’s “religion” of Cricket and gets to bat against one of the greatest pitchers. Another eye-opener for him is the bright colors and the crowds! He does get a respite from all the hustle and bustle in a beautiful hotel situated in a lush, quiet area where, as he says, all he hears are the chirping birds. That’s a far cry from the city with the crowds and the noise.

For his final stop on his Bucket List adventure, Levy travels to Vancouver where he and Michael Bublé journey from the snowy mountains to the ocean where, to Eugene’s chagrin, they go crab fishing. Being from Toronto, there is an East/West rivalry between Vancouverite Bublé and Torontonian Levy, as the actor and singer discuss the differences between the two vastly different sections of their country.

What makes his travels fun to watch is Eugene Levy himself. He is self-deprecating and his humor is subtle yet hilarious. He steps out of his comfort zone in every place he visits and expands his horizons, literally.

Going on these journeys with him makes for entertaining viewing. It might even spur some viewers into exploring some of these cities and countries themselves. Or, maybe they might be happy just to do it through the eyes of Eugene Levy.

This is the third season of the series. What’s next for the intrepid traveler? Time will tell.

“The Reluctant Traveler” Season 3 is now available to stream on Apple TV Plus. Having all the episodes available makes for a fun evening or two. Grab some popcorn and enjoy his travels. And viewers don’t need to have a passport. With Levy’s wit, enthusiasm, can even charm, these adventures are a fun escape from everyday life while bringing new places and events to viewers.
