“Puffs” is a 2015 play by New York-based playwright Matt Cox that parodies the popular “Harry Potter” book series by J.K. Rowling and tells the story of a group of students, the Puffs, who are trying to navigate several chaotic years at their magical school.
The show is directed by Tali Farrer and Gwen Wood, who both also share duties as stage managers.
While the story premise will be familiar to fans of “Harry Potter,” this is the Lehi Arts Council’s first time doing a production of “Puffs.”
“Gwen and I have been friends for a long time, and we have also both been ‘Harry Potter’ fans, like our whole lives. And so it just made complete sense for both of us to direct this together and have such a good time with it,” Farrer said.
The cast consists of 21 actors ranging in age from high school students to seasoned adult actors.
Audience members will get a sense of comedy and heartfelt moments through the magical adventure.
Some cast members show off their versatile skill sets by performing in multiple roles.
“We get to see a few actors playing a funny ghost and also a giant snake,” Wood said “And so it’s fun to see how they use their physical choices to display all the different characters of their cast.”
The production kicked off Oct. 11 at the Lehi Arts Center. Audience members who caught one of the first performances took to social media reviewing the performance, calling the cast members “amazing, committed and engaging.”
The family-friendly show and its characters aim to relate to both “Harry Potter” fans and those who aren’t so familiar with the fantasy series.
“There are definitely some jokes in the play that if you are watching all the movies and have read all the books, it’s probably going to hit a little bit deeper and funnier for you, but the show is really for anyone,” Farrer told the Daily Herald.
She says audience members may also come away with a lesson of learning how to value their place in a community, within their family and in life in general.
“One of the main themes in this show is like rooting for underdogs, but also really being realistic about, you know, sometimes in our lives we feel like the main character and other times we feel like a side character,” Farrer said.
While the goal of the script is certainly to provide laughter, Wood says audience members will leave with a full heart and sense of appreciation for those around them.
“It’s very much like an escape from anything you may be facing or feeling in life, and just getting a chance to explore this world in a new light that’s light-hearted and fun and silly, while also conveying a really important message,” she explained.
“Puffs” runs through Oct. 26. Tickets can be purchased online at lehiarts.org or at the door.
