Lone Peak’s Brown loves to cook and play soccer
She may not have her own show, yet, but Hailey Brown loves to cook.
She isn’t too bad at soccer either.
Brown, the goalkeeper for the Lone Peak girls soccer team, has led the Knights in serving up plenty of humble pie on the field while preparing dessert off the field.
Lone Peak is off to a 6-1-0 start (1-0 in Region 4 at press time), with countless big stops and victories coming on the strength of a Knight defense that is anchored by Brown.
“I like to hang out with my friends and family and I like to cook,” Brown said. “Mostly I like the desserts the best and I cook those because I like eating them. So far I haven’t cooked anything too crazy and the worst thing I’ve burned was brownies. I forgot about them and they burned.”
Kitchen war stories aside, Brown has been involved in her first love, soccer, for 12 years and has seen the game go from being a way to pass the time to something that she has a true passion for.
“I started playing when I was 4 years old and it was just something to do,” she said. “But it grew into something I love. Either I’m playing for the high school or the club team that I’m on. During summer I’m usually home for about a week because I’m playing for my club team, Sparta, or I’m going to camps.”
That love of soccer has already resulted in interest from colleges and universities in Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Texas, Louisiana and Arizona, but Brown would prefer to remain in Utah.
“I want to go to college and play soccer and I want to stay in the state of Utah,” she said. “But only for the schools that have a Division I team.”
Although Brown admitted that playing in Nevada or California wouldn’t be too bad, it was the need for her family, especially her mom, to be involved that will likely keep her in Utah.
“For my games, I want to be close to my family,” Brown said. “My friends are here and I want my mom to be able to come to watch every game.
“It would be hard to not have my family there, since right now my mom comes to all the games and my dad is there for most of them. I like having my family there and I want them there for college.”
Not that her time playing soccer is all work and no play.
“We do a three-versus-two drill and whichever team loses has to do ‘butts-up’ against the goal,” Brown said. “The winners get to kick soccer balls at the losers and to see them stagger after having been hit in the butt. It’s pretty funny.”
Brown has been on the losing end of that game, but has only been hit in the arms and the head.
For the Knights, the chance to play with an athlete like Brown in the net has aided those around her and has also helped make coach Mike La Hargoue’s transition to Lone Peak a smooth one.
“She’s a stabilizing force and is someone that we can count on in a day when not a lot of gals want to play keeper,” La said. “Hailey has been here both years that I’ve been here and has been solid the whole time.
“She’s an All-State type of keeper and has taken her practice and training seriously. She gets challenged and she steps up and takes the challenge.”
Brown and her teammates are prepared to step up to the rigors of region play, which continues Friday when Pleasant Grove comes to visit.
But, when she isn’t chasing down or throwing herself at soccer balls, Brown will be there to help her mom in the kitchen. Especially if dessert is next on the menu.
