Alleged rape victim uses fake phone call to summon police
By pretending to talk to her sister, a woman was able to call 911 on Thursday morning and tell dispatchers that she had been raped and was being held against her will.
“Female caller was able to identify an approximate location and circumstances by deceiving the male subject, stating she was speaking to her sister, who was concerned about her,” an officer wrote in the affidavit. “She can be heard on the 911 tape whispering to the dispatcher, ‘Help me.’ “
Dispatchers asked her questions that required only “yes” or “no” answers.
“Dispatch did a really great job of knowing something wasn’t right with the call,” said Utah County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Mike Brower.
Brower said the woman met Jake James Machan, 25, through a mutual friend about a month ago. Brower said he believes the woman also lives in Salt Lake County, where Machan picked her up Wednesday evening.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Machan and the woman arranged to meet so that Machan could buy her cigarettes. However, when he arrived at her home, he did not have any cigarettes, and the pair left to buy some. They allegedly drove to a 7-Eleven convenience store, where the woman took a swallow of a drink Machan allegedly gave to her, which she believed was vodka.
Shortly after taking the drink, she reportedly began to feel “extremely tired.” She fell asleep and allegedly woke to Machan raping her. According to the affidavit, she repeatedly asked to be taken home, but Machan refused.
At one point, the woman was able to make a 911 call, under the guise that she was speaking to her sister.
Brower said police located Machan’s pickup truck south of Saratoga Springs, in the foothills west of State Road 68. According to the report, responding officers found the woman nude, and Machan partially nude. The woman reportedly told officers at the scene that she had been taken to an unknown area against her will and raped. She also allegedly told them Machan had fondled her while they were driving.
Machan was arrested and was held with a $25,000 bail on charges of rape and aggravated kidnapping, both first-degree felonies.
According to court records, Machan has a criminal history involving drugs and theft dating from 2003. At the time of his arrest, Machan was on probation for several different charges, including failure to stop or respond at the command of police, obstruction of justice and escape from official custody.
