Touted as a facility for all residents to use, the Lehi Civic Center officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday.

The 60,000-square-foot building will house city administrative operations, a council chamber, a public library and community gathering spaces.

“To the people of Lehi, this is your building,” Mayor Paul Binns said at the ceremony. “It’s the Lehi Civic Center. It’s for all to come and enjoy. It was built for you, and it belongs to you. So as we open the doors today, let’s do it with excitement and pride, because the best part of this building isn’t what it is, it’s what it will help us become.”

Financed by a portion of a $20 million municipal building authority bond and infused with cash, according to City Administrator Jason Walker, the facility was built in less than two years. The building itself secures the bond and will be paid off with future sales tax revenue, Walker said.

Its exterior edifice was designed to pay homage to a community hub of old, the Lehi Tabernacle, with a tall central tower fitted with a pyramid top and corner towers that match the tabernacle’s silhouette.

“It does stand out, with the white brick and the towers,” Walker said. “You can see it from a ways off. And we’ve already seen people drawn to it, even before it was open, wanting to come inside and see what all the buzz was about.”

What city officials are excited about the most, though, is what will take place inside. Amenities include a front entryway fitted with a grand piano donated to the city that can hold piano recitals and wedding receptions, Walker said.

There is 40,ooo square feet of public space, including a 2,800-square-foot programming room for classes and workshops and community room for banquets and events. Multiple conference and meeting rooms can be rented out to the community, and the council chamber is designed to seat more people.

The library stretches two stories and holds a teen and children’s areas, an expanded programming room and a recording studio.

“We’re a rapidly growing city and we’ve needed more space for quite some time,” Walker said. “Our old library was falling apart. We just wanted to really make a building that we could be proud of, that could be a gathering place for the community.”

Starting at $4.32/week.
